AV 65 gound wiring?

Post by mekhem » Sat May 21, 2016 5:25 pm

Is this the new normal for AV 65 wiring?

There is no wire running to the trem cavity, although the hole is there.

Picks of the wiring.

Mekhem, my AV65 Jazzmaster was the same.

The strings are intended to be grounded via the small wire under the lower thimble per you second photo. It looks like you took the thimbles out when you disassembled your guitar. The wire gets sandwiched under the metal shielding plate under the pickguard.

You can always add another ground wire under the tremolo unit and pull the wire through the pre-drilled hole and ground it in the lead control cavity. Some will say that this is overkill and technically unnecessary but I thought that it made a bit of positive difference.

I also have a MIM Classic 60's Jazzmaster. It does not have the pre-drilled hole between the tremolo cavity and the lead control cavity, it is just grounded via the lower thimble, like in your AV65.

Thanks, I think I'll have to do something. This particular guitar seems to be hyper sensitive to humm.

Mekhem, you might want to look into a shielding tub that fits into the control cavity (the AV65 just has the shielding plates shown in your photos).

I haven't tried putting a shielding tub in my AV65, but my Custom Shop Jazzmaster has a shielding tub and it runs much quieter than my AV65. I can't say if the tub is the main reason for this or not but I am thinking of trying it.

As an experiment, I put an anodised aluminium gold guard onto a 60's Classic Jazzmaster and it seemed to reduce hum a bit. Has anyone put a gold guard on a firemist silver jazzmaster? It might look pretty good.

I haven't check to see if my CS has a tub - but its pretty quiet. I had a Gold AV65 that was also very quiet. I will try the extra wire from the lead cavity into/underneath the trem unit and see if that helps. I also have a black anodized guard , but not shield for it, so that may be after the extra wire.
