Favorite 12 string strings for electric

Post by Alex5536 » Tue Nov 24, 2015 4:24 am

What is every ones favorites and why? I need to put in an order and from what I see at guitar center they have ernie ball 8's and 9's, D'addario 10's and ernie ball 11's. I use 11's on my strat and on my gibson semi-hollow. I'm not going to do any bends so should I just get the higher gauge? Because of the added strings, will the neck tension be too high with 11's? What is everyone's thoughts?

D'addario EXL 150 12 string set (10-46). I use these on my Danelectro 12 string and Mandoguitar (with unison G). Feels most similar to my standard electric 6 strings, which is why I use them.

I mix a D'Addario Nashville set with a Extra Light D'Addario flat wound set (10-48). So far,
so good.

Seems like an interesting idea! Do you replace the round wound octave E string from the Nashville set with a flatwound string?

The D'addario 12s are fine, if unspectacular.

I like the Thomastik Infeld flats on my 330/12 but (/because) they sound really "vintage." I really like the Rickenbacker brand 12s on my other one, as they have more of an 80s jangle vs. 60s jangle thing going on. (And they stayed in tune really well in the studio, so much that the engineer asked who set up the guitar). I've also found different compressors to make a huge difference, too, with Janglebox following through with every claim it makes. I'm currently using the compressor in an Ibanez UE rack or CP10 for a little less "incense and peppermints," or what have you.

so I strung up the guitar (build post to be followed) with 10's (DA's). I had just played a hagstrom electric 12 at a store with 10's and loved it, but it seemed the the tension was too high on my Jazzmaster. I'm assuming that's the scale length difference i am feeling but i could be wrong. i think i'm going to use EB slinkies (8's) when I restring the guitar, which should be soon because of wanting to rewire some things.

i did just get a compressor over the weekend at Ludlow Guitars in the lower east side in NY. i got the fairfield accountant. i just really liked how easy it was to dial in right away, and i liked what i heard over a bunch of other compressors i a/b'd. anyways, thanks for the help so far

p.s. how do you attach pictures to posts? i have pictures on my local hardrive, but do i need to get them on an online image sharing site so there is an URL?

No. I kept the round wounds of the Nashville set.
It seemed easy to find the Nashville set as well as the Chrome 10's. The only diff is the B strings are 13 & 14 instead of being the same gage. I don't seem to notice.

I just tried this with my Danelectro DC-12 - subtle, but nice change to the sound! I might keep going with this set up. Thanks for the idea!

I've had good success using the D'addairo's mentioned. Have had both Dano & Rickenbacker 12 strings, and currently have a Ric 620-12. Strings seemed to work fine on both, but I would highly recommend and good setup. 12 string guitars are a bit trickier to setup so they feel good. They're not as forgiving as a 6 string. Just my experience on this

you can also try using a single wound G string instead for a different feel and sound :)
