Very strange USA thimbles – maybe faulty??

Post by rexter » Mon Oct 05, 2015 2:10 am

Just received a pack of brand new AVRI/USA Jazz/Jag thimbles in the mail.

The holes seem really small ––– anyone agree? A staytrem for Usa models JUST fits in there but does not rock at all. An old JM bridge which i think is CIJ has no chance of fitting in at all.

Both these bridges fit into another guitar fitted with AVRI/USA thimbles and rock as normal.

Do you think these just haven't been machined properly? They were brand new in a sealed Fender USA packet...
Weird!!

I haven't played many of the new Jazzmaster/Jaguar offerings, but aren't the thimbles on the Road Worn offsets made so that the bridge doesn't rock? I remember noticing a tighter fit on the thimbles for the one Road Worn Jazzmaster I tried out. In any case, I don't think the non-rocking aspect would be any harm. I haven't noticed any difference in tuning stability or anything like that. YMMV, however.

I'm 99% sure these are the same thimbles that are used on the Road Worn Jazzmasters and Jaguars. They're designed so that the bridge doesn't rock.

Maybe so StevenO... Thanks. But it just seems weird that they would totally replace all the Avri thimbles with these new ones - or is there a different part number? As soon as I saw them i knew they wouldn't fit like normal, a pair I bought and installed a month or two ago are totally different - ie like they used to be.

So wait, Fender now makes thimbles in which the bridge sits flush? On which models, exactly?
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Could be some kind of diabolical scheme to get people to stop buying mastery bridges. Staytrem bridges would still fit, of course.

I fear that in a year or two it will be impossible to buy two matching parts in one go...

When you look at all the eBay listings for thimbles the still list the internal diameter of the holes as 8.3mm (metric, sorry!) which the ones I got definitely aren't – probably the 7mm mexican ones. But still labelled as AVRI - Vintage reissue spec???
I think mine may be an anomaly - they surely can't just start rolling out parts with the wrong specs but the same part number?
I mean it might put people off buying mastery bridges... but if people can't change the bridge on the guitars some may stop buying them altogether surely?
