Hum when against my body. No idea whats wrong.
So my AVRI jag hums really bad when it's up against my body when i'm playing. It has some hum from the bridge not grounding super well but this hum comes on on top of that one. It goes away if it's held far enough away from my body. Is this from a grounding problem or is it from something not being shielded enough?

You've not got a phone in your pocket do you? I sometimes get hum from that.

For the sake of my life, I cannot even imagine hum being caused by body contact (apart from the usual ground-to-bridge/-tailpiece issue).

Exactly what I was thinking. Is your guitar shielded?cbrown wrote:You've not got a phone in your pocket do you? I sometimes get hum from that.

No phone in my pocket. I have shitty lighting in my music room but yea, it humbs a little from the usual grounding but then when it's against you it hums worse.. and it's an AVRI 62 Jag. So it has the shielding plates in it. I'm wondering if maybe i have a bad shield claw on one of my pickups?

Well your body does pick up a whole lot of electrical interference, thats the reason you get a massive buzz when you touch the end of your guitar lead, you can also hear it when probing doing repairs in live amps etc, your body acts as an aerial. But that usually wouldn't come through if you didn't have some strong source of external interference where you are, lots of fluorescent high voltage lights maybe? Jags are usually really well shielded too.
If the power system wherever you're playing is old too it might be that as well. Does it happen anywhere else that you play guitar, at shows, a friends place or rehearsal room?

A friend had this problem, turns out he was made of metal plates and circuit boards.

My wife hums when she's up against my body. I've gotten used to it. No plans to swap her out for a newer model.
