Thin Skin Issues
Hi, I have owned for the last couple of years a Shell Pink TS jaguar and love it.
It however rarely gets played in recent times due to the frets, I have a 73 mustang and a strat + tele etc and find them miles faster and more natural feeling to play to me as I can feel the fretboard a little more and just move better.
I had suspected this was a radius issue but I've found even 12' radius guitars that I prefer the feel of neck wise so I'm fairly certain its the frets. I think they are 6105 extra tall but skinny frets as was standard on thin skins and I really would just like opinions on what I should do.
I adore the look of the guitar, I like the AV65's and JM Jags alot along with the normal AV62's and I know they all have traditional smaller vintage frets which is what I'm used to I'm fairly sure, I wouldnt know how to find someone with one of these guitars to trade (If I decided to do that) but its an option, the other obvious option is a refret but they are fairly expensive and I dont want to suddenly hate the guitar or feel I've ruined it in some way. I have expereicnce with almost anything guitars can throw at you except for refrets I'm not sure on what would be different etc..
Please can you advise me? thanks guys!

Re: Thin Skin Issues
you could take it to a luthier and ask him to take the height of the frets down a little. Maybe a little at a time.

Hmm it's an idea, i've tried posting it on a guitar FB page for trade but its difficult to find people with offsets I just seemed to get a flurry of pointy guitars with the closest thing being a non reverse firebird :/

Re: Thin Skin Issues
Other than the cool colors and matching headstock, the frets and modern radius was kind of the thinskins selling point for some people. If you absolutely know you want to keep the guitar, then altering the frets is an option. But, I do think it would devalue it if you went to sell it later. I would probably sell it and use the money for an AVRI, av65, or Marr jag.

I wouldn't hesitate shaving the frets down or having it done (at around 100 bucks, depending).

Re: Thin Skin Issues
That's exactly how I feel about my TSJM (also shell pink). I love everything about the guitar except the frets. It just doesn't feel the way I want it to. I'm actually going to my luthier today to pick up my National town and country (Finally done!!!) and I'll be dropping off my jazzmaster for him to lower the frets. I was a bit concerned about resale value and all of that but honestly I can't see getting rid of this guitar so why not have it the way I want it. I'll be sure to let you know how it feels when I get it back.

Thats fantastic thank you I look forward to hearing thats exactly how I feel so I'm interested to hear if it changes it, had a conversation with a luthier today about it and he offered a pretty good deal but I'd almost managed to warm myself up for a trade/sale but if the frets does make a good huge difference I'll have to think through it again
And yeah I dont really want to be without a jag I I think I would have to trade it for any of those 3 and I'd probably be pretty happy but I dont know where to look for that bleh

Re: Thin Skin Issues
So my luthier referred me to another shop in town with a plek machine. He said they usually charge about $100 less than a refret and I could get the frets down to any desired height. So I will be taking it over to the other shop real soon and I'll let you know.

Id be weary about trading it. Especially with a music store. You wont get good value trading that specific guitar IMO.

At least bringing the frets down is cheaper than having it refreshed!

Re: Thin Skin Issues
The problem I have with tall/narrow fret wire is that my fingers get hung up on it when I slide up and down the neck. Makes the whole affair feel rather clumsy.
I much prefer a wider fret to a narrow one.
