Wiring both Jazzmaster pickups, as one single humbucker???

Post by candletears7 » Wed May 20, 2015 3:27 pm

I was talking to my tech who refretted my Jazzmaster, we got talking about other bridge pickups.
As I have a couple other humbucking guitars (Explorer, Les Paul Custom), I don't want simply another PAF in the bridge. I was considering a Widerange for a mix of the single coil articulation and the humbucking power, but then the tech suggested something really cool.

As I never use the Rhythm circuit in my Jazzmaster, we got talking about wiring the guitar up to that Rhythm switch, so one pickup could have its' the polarity inverted thereby making both single coils act as one humbucker, taking in the frequency range of both the neck and bridge pickups.

Is this common? Anyone have a schematic for this? I'd like to post a thread on this subject so maybe reply in that one. :)

Jazzmaster pickups are already always reverse wound and with reverse polarity, so they function similar to a humbucker when both are engaged. You can hear a noticeable difference when one pickup is on compared to the both of them being on.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

That is true.
However, I don't want to use the middle position for my rhythm work.
I'm not after the hum cancelling effect of a humbucker, I'm after the tighter more percussive sound.
So combining the 2 as a single humbucker is not possible?
Or I may be explaining this incorrectly and perhaps I mean inverted phase, not polarity.

Is it possible to wire the middle position of a JM/LP 3 way toggle to be in series?

Forum member Empyrean did it on a Jazzmaster that I have. It sounds great.

So it would appear that what I was after was how to wind a Jazzmaster in Series, with the negative of the neck pickup to ground, positive of neck pickup to negative of bridge pickup and positive of bridge pickup to to output.
Essentially what is displayed in this wiring diagram:
