AVRI/Vintage JM String Gauge Poll

Post by tubeswell » Thu Apr 12, 2012 8:57 am

I thought of running a poll specifically for Jazzies with 7.25" neck radius, vintage frets (25.5" scale length) because that is what I have got recently and I find the 10 roundwounds on it easy to play, perhaps a bit too easy.

While peeps with other types of geetars are welcome to contribute, if you do, could you please post which type of guitar you are using which type of string gauges with i.e.:.

AVRI Jazzy 10-46
Am Series Strat 10-46
etc

(To begin with I've cast my vote at 10 to whatever (round), because that is what my AVRI Jazzie shipped with new. This may change over time of course)

For the time being - this is a never-ending poll, but each poster gets one vote, altho' they can subsequently change that vote.

My jazzmaster has a 9.5" radius but has the vintage correct trem placement etc. I've been using 11's on it and 11's on my jaguar. 10's on my strat. But I recently put 12's with a wound G on the jaguar, great for chords. And I'm thinking about putting some 11's on my strat too.

Well, I use .09" gauge strings.

AH! a deficiency in the Poll already! - sorry 'bout that Larry. Not sure if I can amend the poll - I'll check it out

Edit. bugger! it deleted the first 4 results from poll dammit, which were 2 x 10 round and 2 x 11 flat (Moral of the story - don't try and feck with Polls you have already started :fp: . Help! Mods!)

12 flats. My guitar is CIJ JM, but the specs that you listed are the same as AVRI and vintage, so I guess it counts. BTW, I will be very surprised if the great majority does not use 11s and if there are more than, say, 2 people who use 9s (depending on the sample size).

Currently using these on my 1963 and Lee Ranaldo JM:

They feel like something in between 11s and 12s actually, which suits me perfectly. Great strings.

AVRI Jag with 11's. I've used 12's on it, and may go back, but 11's for now.

I use 10-52 on my Jazzmaster after a few try. I use 11-46 on my Jaguar (with a stop tail bridge) for normal tuning and 11-52 for one-step down tuning.

I use the same. Fantastic strings, and yes, they feel like 11s, or even lighter to me. For instance, they feel much lighter than the Pyramid Gold 11s.

If someone does use 14s I'd be interested to hear the reasoning behind it.

Probably to make their guitar sound like the Last Judgement. SRV used 16's or 17's.

I use these as well, after much rooting around with different types & sizes.
I use the BB13,s for my EPI Dot. The wound 3rd & heavier gauge go sweet on a semi.

I play 11-52s. These are D'Addario Medium Top Heavy Bottom strings.
They are absolutely great. I tried their 10-52s too,but those were too unbalanced.
I "only" have a Squier J Mascis JM, but also have them ob my strats.
Still easy to bend on the higher strings -- but you get a nice growl on the wound strings. Perfect.
I also like the added stiffness of the lower strings.
I play them tuned E-e.

I use 12 flats on mine (Thomastik JS112).
Best strings for the classic surf-tone IMHO
