I've never oiled my tuners in my life, and I've owned 40+ year old vintage Klusons for years.

never saw the need for it....maybe the fact I change tunings on my guitar often (going from the one I use in the band I'm in to standard and then to the tunings I use for my solo stuff) keeps them working ok?

who knows?  ???

They talk about greasing tuners here:

My tuners are only a few years old so I dont worry about it and think unless you gig a lot and/or live in Russia or Alaska you dont have too much to worry about. But I guess its not a bad preventative maintenance thing.

I signed up for the Stewart Macdonald tech tips weekly email list, and ther was one on tuner repair not too long ago.  Bottom line - if they work OK then don't do a thing,  If they are not smooth then you first flush them with naptha to remove old grease and dirt, then re-lube them by injecting vaseline or a similar grease into the little grease hole.  I did this with the gnarly old Klusons on my '63 JM and it worked great.

What I use is a product called "Nut sauce". It's a very thick, almost grease like, product. It's primarily used for nut slots, bridge slots, etc., but it works great for tuners.

This is something that's been bugging me.  I have two sets of Gotohs (fairly new) that are stiff and cranky and then I have a cheap-o neck with god-knows-what kind of tuners that are smooth as silk!  Come to think of it, they're probably off a stratacoustic...
I'm going to try that naptha trick.  That sounds reasonable. :)
One more guitar, then I'll practice!

Thanks for the links and info guys. A couple of my Mustang's tuners are really sticky from disuse and they need some love.
