Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
Does anyone make jaguar pickups that fit in a Jazzmaster pickup cover?

Don't all Jag pickups fit under JM covers? AFAIK the Jag pickups are both shorter and narrower...

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
Do many people put a jaguar pickup in the bridge with a Jazzmaster in the neck? Seems comparable to the frequent p90 in the bridge Jazzmaster in the neck configuration that is so popular.

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
I think a P90 would be fatter/more midrange heavy than a Jag pickup in the bridge.
I've been pondering over this for awhile, and I realised something...Lots of people say that MIJ/CIJ JM pickups are wound like Strat pickups, and AFAIK Jag pickups aren't too different from Strat ones, so doesn't that meant that stock MIJ/CIJ JMs are kinda like regular scale Jags?

That is a very good point indeed!thestranger wrote:I think a P90 would be fatter/more midrange heavy than a Jag pickup in the bridge.

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
If I was going to mix I would do the opposite, ie Jag in the neck position and JM in the bridge position since the spikier Jag pickup would balance better with the mellower JM pickup. Going the other way around would probably be a bit like a Tele Custom with a single coil bridge pickup and a neck humbucker.pocaloc wrote:Do many people put a jaguar pickup in the bridge with a Jazzmaster in the neck? Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
Regardless of whether a JM pickup is MIJ or MIA, or MIM it will still sound significantly different to a Jag pickup due to its completely different winding profile. As the guitar's name suggests, it was aimed at Jazz players, so the pickups were wound low and wide to produce that more characteristic mellow tone, similar to Fender's competitors in the jazz guitar market, namely Gibson and Gretsch. Leo designed the JM pickup to sound different than anything he'd done to that point(or more "jazzy") and then the Jag was added to the lineup to mix things up with the shorter scale and different switching options...if you want a Jag to sound more fat and ballsy like a two pickup strat, all you gotta do is put 250K pots in it and a 0.05 PIO cap... same can be done to a JM to give it more grunt...hwestman wrote:That is a very good point indeed!thestranger wrote:I think a P90 would be fatter/more midrange heavy than a Jag pickup in the bridge.

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
With all due respect you are wrong about the pickups. The MIJ/CIJ JM pickups have tall and narrow coils which is why a lot of people swap them out in search of more authentic JM tones.boss302bass wrote:Regardless of whether a JM pickup is MIJ or MIA, or MIM it will still sound significantly different to a Jag pickup due to its completely different winding profile. I think you are dead on about the pot change fattening up the Jag sound though... but couldn't the same effect be reached by backing off/dialling back the 1 MEG volume and tone controls so that they give 250K of resistance?

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
Hey Hwestman...
I haven't seen a CIJ JM p/up, but I did do a job on a MIM JM which the customer wanted modded with some Curtises, and the originals looked pretty much the same as the ones Curtis supplied - as far as I knew Curtis used the trad magnets and Formvar wire whereas the MIM probably didn't - hence the much nicer sound out of the Curtis p/ups... - so that was my experience with a MIM JM...(turns out I read the original post wrong re the CIJ/MIJ pups, I thought it said CIJ/MIM...sorry!)
As far as the backing off the Jag vol/tone to get a similar resistance to a strat, I guess you could do that but you're gonna have to crank the funk out of your amp to bring the volume back up, and you still have that cap in there that isn't a 0.05...

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
Don't forget before wood there is foam
jag pups are fews mm more than jazz pups ,i see no routing needed , and a jag pups fit in jazz cover ,the pole spacing are identicale
i Don't see an interest to put a jag instead of jazz in bridge (miss some warm )but in neck why not

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
no ,but a jazzmaster pickup cover height is 14.5 mm
http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/2PCSJazzma ... _2548.html
mine are mount and i don' t want to open
and a jag is 16 mm
i have a spare on hand if you count 2 mm for forbon and solder
it will be 18 - 14 = 4 mm of difference
maybe you can't have the pups under the guard but as i shim my jazz my pups are more high than yours ?

Re: Jaguar pickups in a Jazzmaster?
I've done it too. I just shimmed the neck and raised the bridge for the extra clearance so that I didn't have to rout the wood.
The issue is string clearance, not the rout itself. You can either dig down or just raise the strings.
