Mustang frets out/buzzes on 14/16 D&G string

Post by Pacafeliz » Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:14 pm

well yes i love my new old competition mustang and i've been able to shim the neck with a guitar pick, so it plays better and the strings aren't that high anymore. but still quite high. now, but the main problem is that on the D and G string there is massive buzz ("fretting out") going on. real nasty.
i've read that this is common, but how can i fix that? do i need to work on/with the truss rod?

it seems kinda weird to me that even with a thick guitar pick in the neck pocket, the action is still so high, too.

any advice?
i've been trying to contact my "guitar guy", but he seems to be outta town, and i just GOTTA learn someday...

thnx,

Pat.

once i had this issue with my mustang, i disabled the trem and it went away, then i re-raised the trem but a good bit less and never had the issue again, try that

maybe it's got some back bow and needs the truss rod loosened?

ok guess i'm on the right path... i must confess that i'd already turned the truss rod 1/4 turn counter-clockwise, as it was set on FULL clockwise, and it got a little better.
so, off comes the neck one more time... we'll see what happens! :D
stay tuned!

nah it only made it worse, buzzing all over the neck... so i set it back and came up with the idea of instead shimming the 2 saddles (D and G) with a thin guitar pick cut to size. it has lowered the buzzing without raising the strings too much...

heh... guerrilla guitar fixing! :D
thanks!

BE gentle with the truss. It takes a good few hours to settle after a tweak. When I make an adjustment I generally restring it to pitch and leave it alone for at least three hours. Sometimes, if you listen closely, you can actually hear the neck shifting as the relief changes. Provided your not listening to music or whatever at the time ;)

I'm usually not that careful with my guitars but there's a difference between a few body dings and ruining the neck...
