Silly Jazzmaster Pickup Question
I just got my Curtis Novak pickups in the mail today. I'm thinking of installing them myself, but I have a quick question. When I open it up and take the old pickups out of the covers, how do I attach the new pickups to the pickup covers. Am I overthinking this or is there something to it that I am just not aware of?

Re: Silly Jazzmaster Pickup Question
I always thought it was a presure fit, and that they weren't actually attached to the covers.
...I have yet to own a Jazzmaster...Yet.

I finally finish building a guitar, go to play it, and then remember, "oh yeah, that's right. I suck at playing... Why did I build another guitar again?"

On strats, its the mounting screws that keep the plastic cover attached to the pickup.
Just put the other covers on and mount it, I would guess.

yeah, what I meant by presure fit was, setting the pickup on the foam strips and just screwing the cover down over it. Were the ones you pulled attached?

I haven't pulled them yet, I was planning on doing it tomorrow morning. I was just afraid I was gonna get elbow deep in Jazzmaster guts and get lost.AWSchmit wrote:yeah, what I meant by presure fit was, setting the pickup on the foam strips and just screwing the cover down over it. If you make a mistake you can always fix it. try not too panic if you do. I bet you'll do fine, just take your time. good luck.

Re: Silly Jazzmaster Pickup Question
Yes, you are overthinking it. Just open up the guitar. It's completely self-explanatory.
JM pickups are held in place by foam placed beneath them. If you can get them to a pleasing height (may be the case if you're working on a CIJ/MIJ), just throw some more in there - half a sponge or whatever you have around.

Re: Silly Jazzmaster Pickup Question
Ok thanks everyone. I got the pickups in and soldered ok. The only problem was I didn't pay attention how the wires were laying when I opened it up and when I put the wires back in place, the wires coming from the rhythm circuit kinda bunched up under one corner of the neck pickup. I have to open it back up and try and figure out where the wires are supposed to lay.

Re: Silly Jazzmaster Pickup Question
There should be a little space b/w the neck pickup and the body wood b/w the two pickups. Kinda like a channel - the wire fits nicely through here as it goes to the main control cavity. It can be tricky to get it all to stay in place as you put the guard back on, but that should do it.
