Strings for Jazzmaster..

Post by Amber » Thu Mar 22, 2007 3:11 am

I'm new to the JM. I usually use DR Jeff Healy 10-58 strings on a strat. I like the way they feel.

I play stuff like Swervedriver, Longview, My Vitriol, Thick sounding but clear stuff.

Any suggestions? I'm open to try something new. I like a fat round sound with lots of clarity and spike at the same time. A good balance. I think the think strings balance out well on a strat's single coil but I'm not sure how a JM would work with them.

I think if you have a Jazzmaster or Jaguar, you owe it to yourself to try flats on them, at least once. You may not like them, a lot of people don't, but they sound great on a Jazz or Jag.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

Flatwounds, yes-yes-yes. I can't even play with rounds anymore  ;)

I'm gonna try flats some day.

Changed to DR 11's today, and they're SO much better than Daddario's. Daddario's are so rough and the DR's are so gentle and brighter.

Those 10-58s would probably be okay, I prefer an 11 up top, but on a JM i bet the tension would be sufficient.
I prefer their older stuff.

I have strung both my JM and Jag with heavy (13s) flatwounds in the past.
You do get a fuller sound, no doubt with the heavier strings.
The problem with the flats I found was they thump on the low E and A and you dont get any high end on them so they sound dull and you therefore lose some of the inherent tone of the guitars.
I tried them because my son recommended it, because he puts them on his Gibson ES335. But he likes the thump, I really dont.
So I put 11s round on my Jag and 10s round on my JM and am happier with this.
9''s are just too thin for either one, I find.
Great for strats though.

Jesus, I could never use 9's. Most of the stuff I play, the E and B strings are usually played open.

I really wish I could find a string pack that was 58 - 11 with a wound G. Guess I'm gonna have to make my own. Anyone know of good site that sells single strings this way?

Wow, thanks. I've always used that site and never noticed it.

Unfortunately, they don't stock my favorite strings DR.

I like Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky 2627 on both the Jag and the Jazzmaster (11-15-22p-30-42-54)

I have to say that I really like Pyramid flats on some of my Jazzmasters too. To my ears, they have a nice balance between being just bright enough, but not too dead or dull. Strangely enough though, I don't like them too much on hollowbodies. They sound too bland to me for that particular application. But for Jazzmasters...  :?
