I've got a sweet macro lens that can get REALLY close.  Are you sure you don't want to change your mind?

I once got a '62 JM from Yahoo classifieds 2000.com (I'm dating myself) that was said to have a broken tremelo.  Turns out somebody had installed the pivot plate upside down.  It was an easy fix.

Sorry to hear about the troubles....sounds like you need a new nut anyway if you were getting harmonic type sounds from open strings - it's a sign that the nut bottoms are worn.  Actually, I have heard you can fill with bone dust and keep the original nut and just "recut" it....I hope GC comes through for your - that's cool that they offer.  Good luck - sounds like your luthier has a good grasp of what's going on there...
