Wiring help: Idea for rotary switch

Post by stafflod » Sun May 05, 2024 2:48 am

The idea is to replace one of the pots in the Lead circuit with a 4p3t rotary switch.

I rarely use the tone knob so I figure I will let that one go, if I need a tone knob I will mod the Rhythm circuit and replace the 50k tone pot with a 1M one. I'm always been fascinated by Rotary switches and bought a couple when I was dabbling with a Jazzmaster XII. I never put them to use due to no know-how.

I have had a recent spell of energy so I figured I'll put them to use - only to find out:
1. they don't have solder lugs like regular pots
2. they are 2p3t which doesn't solve what I want to do... I have to use them in another project... 8)

My idea:
Let the rotary switch have 3 modes:
1 both pickups in parallell (normal mode)
2 both pickups in series
3 bridge pickup out of phase

The rotary switch will go into the PU selector. I've done the 'both pickups in rhythm circuit'-mod on two JMs and will keep that.

So I've taken two DPDT switch schematics and worked my rotary switch from that. I have no background in electronics so it might be full of errors...

Here's a schematic I've found which is the basis of the Series Mode

So I want to combine the two DPDT schematics for mode 2 and 3

This is my layout for the rotary switch

I think I might have to add a ground to the bridge pickup at some stage.

Interesting! I think I understand what you are doing. You've done all the hard work! What I can see at least:

You have no B- to ground on positions 1 or 2, and no N- to ground on position 3. You also have used 2 wires where 1 would do (and need that pole free to complete the ground connections). So this is what I would change it to. 2 wires removed, 5 added. (I also wrote N+ on there because I accidentally cut off your note on the screenshot.)

Image

This should give you
1. N+ to NS, N- to GR, B- to GR, B+ to BS.
2. N+ to NS, N- to B+, B- to GR, NS to BS.
3. N+ to NS, N- to GR, B- to BS, B+ to GR.

edit: I think you can do even simpler but it's late - I need to sleep!

Have you considered a 4 way rotary
I have used this one many times.

Heres two of my high tech diagrams.
N - N/B Series - N/B Parallel - B

N - N/B Parallel - N/B Parallel "out of phase" - B

If you go with 1st drawing, you could add a OOP switch giving 5 different settings, Ive squeezed a switch between the pots before now..

Nice colours! The 3-way mindset came from my original switch that I bought before (not even knowing what I bought….), I’m open for anything really.

Nice Marauder build btw. Mine is still unfinished (thinline without f-hole and 25” scale). I glued the fretboard to sparsely and the truss rod lifted it.

One thing is that I still want to keep the 3-way toggle switch and not replace that with the rotary switch. Just the rotary as a supplement.
