Clicky vibrato arm

Post by adamrobertt » Wed Sep 09, 2020 9:59 am

I have an AVRI tremolo in both my Jazzmasters.. both are new and both feel nice to use, except for one of them has a clicky vibrato arm when I push down on it. I know this has probably been discussed a lot on here but the search function on this website is nearly useless.

Anyone have any tips on how to remedy this?

Fender needs to redesign their Jazzmaster/ Jaguar vibrato. It was a bad design on release and never changed. Staytrem sell a replacement collet with a nylon sleeve, locking mechanism, and new arm. I added one to my MIM Jazzmaster and the vinrato is now butter smooth and better than the AVRI. £30 well spent!

I'm well aware of the typical issues with these units... I've had about 6 offsets in the past 8 years... but I haven't actually personally experienced this one.

Unfortunately I'm in the US so getting a Staytrem is a bit tricky and expensive. I was hoping someone had a trick for getting the stock unit to stop clicking. It seems to be working well otherwise.

Normally the AVRI tremolo units are not bad...?
Maybe the newer one are also not so good quality like in early 2000´s?

I would put the unit out and unscrew every single part. Maybe you can rasp it a bit on contact points?

Maybe try a stronger spring.

Are you sure it's the arm/collet that's clicking ? If so, you could try a screw-in arm/collet for $20 ...

Or a new AVRI collet for a bit less ...

I'm almost positive it's the collet because I can kind of feel it when I press down, but I suppose I don't actually know for sure without taking the unit apart.

Edit: Ended up taking it off the guitar to see if anything obvious was happening... the answer was not really, but when I put it back together I noticed that now it's remarkably smoother, the problem is almost gone. I'm guessing the plates were slightly out of alignment or something, and now are better aligned? Either way, I always love the "took it apart, put it back together, and now it works" remedy. Easy!
