Spitfire Screw Holes

Post by adamrobertt » Tue Jun 09, 2020 7:05 am

Hey guys. I just got my first Spitfire guard for my Thin Skin Jazzmaster. It's beautiful and it fits well - but I noticed that the screw holes either aren't countersunk as deeply or just aren't as large as the standard holes, and it leaves the screw heads sticking up slightly proud of the surface.

I've read online that this is intentional and that he makes the screw holes smaller than normal for some reason.

My question is this: if I wanted to widen the holes slightly to seat the screws better, what drill bit size should I use? I'm not gonna attack it with power tools, just use a drill bit by hand to gently widen them. I just don't want to make them too wide.

Anyone else do this?

I adjusted my Spitfire guards back in the day. Make sure you use a counter-sink bit. I picked up a 3-pack from Princess Auto and I thinnnk, I used the 1/4" bit. I didn't use a drill though. I just did it slowly and carefully, by hand. Worked out great. Best of luck!

Does anyone know why he cuts his screw holes like this? Is it more vintage correct or something?
