What's the latest on bridges for a Mustang?
I just bought a used Vintage Modified Mustang with the height adjustable saddles. I would like to have a fixed radius bridge (9.5") instead. I know there is the Mastery bridge, but I don't want to spend more on the bridge than I did the guitar. And I'm not much of a tremolo user so I will probably be locking it down.
I'm finding it hard to find information on this board about bridges for a Mustang because most of the links come back for Jazzmasters or Jaguars using mustang-style bridges. Lots of recommendations for a Staytrem bridge, but since they are not shipping outside the U.K. I'm not sure that is a viable option.
So what do people recommend?

The 9.5" fixed radius option is the Mustang-style bridge that first appeared on the Am Pro jaguars and jazzmasters. In 2018 its E-E spacing was reduced to ~52mm.

The newest Am Pro bridge would be my choice. I'd get the nylon bushings that stop the rocking motion, since you plan on hard-tailing (good idea )

I agree American Pro/Performer is probably fine and the best option, with or without the nylon spacers.
Come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen a picture of a Mustang with a Mastery - It's an assumption but for those who do use the vibrato, it seems like there would be *way* too much string movement on a Mustang, for the Mastery to deal with. Is that correct?

You could always set the radius once and then loctite the adjustment screws into place...

Sorry for my ignorance... is ~52mm a good thing or bad thing with regard to the Mustang?timtam wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 6:26 amThe 9.5" fixed radius option is the Mustang-style bridge that first appeared on the Am Pro jaguars and jazzmasters. In 2018 its E-E spacing was reduced to ~52mm.

It means the strings are a little closer together and not as close to the edge of the fretboard.

A lot of people like it because of what HNB said.
I prefer the vintage spacing myself, 52mm just feels and looks wrong to me.

Re: What's the latest on bridges for a Mustang?
I prefer the narrower spacing generally (man, most non-Tele fenders seem to have the Es really close to the fretboard edge!!!), but with the mustang specifically there can be a bit of sideways pull over the saddles because the bridge is so close to the tailpiece which is spaced wider than 52mm. Might be negligible, might not.dbishopbliss wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 9:16 amSorry for my ignorance... is ~52mm a good thing or bad thing with regard to the Mustang?timtam wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 6:26 amThe 9.5" fixed radius option is the Mustang-style bridge that first appeared on the Am Pro jaguars and jazzmasters. The bridge you have now is presumably the 0081239001 / 0054447049.dbishopbliss wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 9:16 amSorry for my ignorance... is ~52mm a good thing or bad thing with regard to the Mustang?timtam wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2019 6:26 amThe 9.5" fixed radius option is the Mustang-style bridge that first appeared on the Am Pro jaguars and jazzmasters. You can measure its E-E spacing; it's usually around 55-56mm, or 11.2mm between strings. With 52mm it's 10.4mm between strings. So it's not that different. It was changed on the Am Pro because the original necks were prone to the E slipping off the edge. You may or may not have that issue.
The Mastery and Staytrem also have 52mm E-E. A number of premium offsets are now stock with 52mm bridges, eg Marr jaguar, Am Pro jag and JM. Most tunomatics are around 52mm. The vintage jag/JM bridge with threaded barrel saddles can have whatever spacing you want (within limits of where the threads fall).

55-56mm is fine on many guitars. But those who have an issue with E slipping off often switch to 52mm. I am not sure that we have had many people who had an issue with a 52mm bridge being too narrow. The only 9.5" fixed radius option that has 55-56mm now would be a original Am Pro bridge. Unlike the Marr jaguar (7.25 radius), which changed its bridge part number when it went narrower, the Am Pro bridge did not change part number (7709942000). But most aftermarket sources should now be selling the 52mm version (always good to check, if that's what you want). The only real way to tell if a bridge that comes off an Am Pro or Marr guitar is 52mm or 56mm is to measure it.
In addition to the 9.5 radius/52mm Am Pro bridge, you may find the 9.5 radius version of the Staytrem (52mm) somewhere online (ebay, reverb), but it probably won't be cheap.

Yeh i don't like 52mm, but that might be a minority. Just is to do with right hand technique i think, being a hard player or a fingerstyle player. Not had the fingerboard issue of anything falling off.. As far as sometimes shimming out the saddles actually, I just really don't like small gap between E and A and it makes the spacing feel uneven too.
