Re: Tell me about flatwounds
I think a huge part of why flats can be extremely unappealing at first is that on an unamplified electric guitar it’s a really dull sound.
I feel the dynamics are bit better, and if you need more sustain and treble you have that by adding gain and turning the brightness up.
I pick very hard and use heavier strings, and I like the punchiness of the flats.
And your vocabulary will adjust bc of the wound G!
If you are playing just clean guitar, the sound is very specific though.
It’s not for everyone, but I think it’s for more people that you think!

Update: I grabbed a pair of Chromes .11s and stuck them on my JM. Absolutely love the feel of them.

Re: Tell me about flatwounds
Glad to hear it!
Of the half-a-dozen flatwound brands I've tried, Daddario Chromes have the smoothest feel, which is kind of addictive.
There was a time when I was struggling to get sounds I wanted from my jazzmaster, then I got some flatwounds and never looked back. I think you'll agree that the change in sound in quite striking.
I'm currently experimenting with lighter gauge flatwounds - Curt Mangan 10-46 at the moment. I'm finding that flatwounds don't need to be heavy to sound great.
Cheers!

Re: Tell me about flatwounds
Hi,
I also have good experiences with the Chromes since years.
Thomastiks are also very good but too expensive...
I tried a few packs of cheaper Galli flatwounds (12-52) for my 64 Jazzmaster. Playing without amp is good, but
at the amp it sounds muddy on the thick strings and on the high strings too loud...
Similar experiences anyone with Galli flats?
Maybe a setup problem? I will get a set of Chromes again and test it.

Re: Tell me about flatwounds
I run Chrome .11s on my JM. The .12s were just too big for me. I typically run .11s on my guitars, but I am contemplating dropping down to .10s for flats. On my Epi ES-335, I couldn't figure out what sort of strings I put on it, and they seemed like flats but not totally. After doing some purchase history sleuthing, I think they're half round .10s? I like them, but they do seem pretty thin. Maybe I'll put .10 chromes on there and see how that feels.

D'addario Chrome 10s are an interesting set. The gauges are more like 11s, with the exception of the high E. I really like them though.
My most recent flatwound experiment has been with Pyramid 10s. This is another strange set: 10-13-19W-30W-35W-46.5W
I can't work out why they made the 4th string a 30...it's way to big compared to the others, and feels odd. The overall sound of the Pyramids is awesome though. I reckon I'll get a set of Pyramid 13-56, shuffle them all along one, and buy a 10 for the high E.
