It's interesting there are counterfeits.

I got mine from a legit shop in person, though.
This is an excellent rectangle

Same, I never buy strings online.

I quite enjoy stringsbymail dotcom. I got like 10 high e singles so that should be me sorted until next week or so.

I've just started buying the Rotosound sets that come with an extra high E.

I haven’t bought Roto’s in like 15 years. I forgot all about them giving an extra high e. It’s cool they still do that.

So I went to the local chain shop today to get my usual NYXL’s & there was none in stock. I grabbed a pack of XL’s .012’s and used that instead. Sure enough 5 minutes after restringing my guitar the high E string broke right at the ball. I know the issue isn’t the tail piece because this hasn’t been a problem with strings in the past & I didn’t tune higher than standard pitch, so I suppose there’s just bum batches?

NYXLs seem fine, but the standard XLs are absolute dogshit strings that have a notorious problem with unwinding at the ball end. Especially on Jag/JM trems. So much so that the shop I'm at has quit using them as the default string when somebody doesn't have a string preference or to restring any of the guitars on the wall when they need it.

I used them exclusively on my JMs in the 90s with no issues. Not sure when they started sucking.

This thread is pretty interesting to me, I've never heard anything but good things from D'addario, and they're the strings I always come back to after trying something new. On the other hand, I've literally heard nothing but bad things about EB's :P

high e strings constantly unwind on Jazzmasters and Jaguars. Stopped using Daddario after that. Now I use Fender Bullets. Cant comment about other string brands.
That's what I did. Oh, and switched to a Mastery trem, which has the screw heads recessed and can't catch on the winding.

I was using Ernie Balls before that.

Oh and I don't if I get XLs or other series... But they always come with extra winding on the ball end

Been using D’adarrio NYXL 10’s Since they came out on my Jazzmasters. They are my favorite strings and I haven’t broken one yet.

Another OP update:

I’ve been using the NYXL’s for a few weeks and I love them to death. I’ve changed them once for a set up. Traveled all the way out to Pittsburgh for a show, recorded with them, play every day for hours. They’re getting dirty, as expected, but they still feel and sound like nearly brand new strings.

I thrash my guitars around quite a bit and I haven’t broken anything. I also have been using the trem religiously and no breaks or anything. They stay in tune better too, I’ve noticed.

I ended up returning my stockpile of XL’s to buy a stockpile of NYXLs. No going back now

So... this thread maybe cursed me, because I I just had this happen after posting a while back how I'd never had this issue... though in this case I had loosened strings in order to swap pickup covers, and then it died when I tried to tune the high E back to pitch.

I always get EXL115Ws because so few manufacturers offer 11s with a wound G. I used to love the Dean Markley vintage sets but of course they were discontinued. For the shortscales I get DR Pure Blues 12s, again for the wound G. I like them too, although they occasionally have light corrosion out of the pack.
I was kind of startled to see the extent to which DRs are made by hand:

Kind of makes me want to buy all my strings from them.
