Put Staytrem in Marrguar..rocking like crazy

Post by Unicorn Warrior » Sat Jan 19, 2019 3:39 pm

My Marrguar had on of the incorrect 55m bridges to start off with. I replaced it with a real staytrem. Fixed that problem, but the thing is now that it rocks. Strings hold it down, but if I manually give it a nudge it seems to shift significantly.

How do I fix it? AVRI thimbles?

Staytrems are designed to rock unless they have the optional bushings. Is it rocking more than the stock bridge?

Yes. Seems to be rocking more than the stock...may be completely normal. Just not used to it

I had one 7.25” Staytrem that would rock so far that it would bump against the thimble and eventually stick in a position where the strings would catch the front edge of the bridge. I’ve had several others though where the rocking hasn’t been a problem, especially with a reasonably good break angle. Hopefully yours will be ok.

They used to send out these little thimbles that would go in the post holes and stop it from rocking. I'd recommend that. Did you buy it directly from StayTrem?

You can adjust rocking to taste by wrapping the posts or finding thimbles with smaller internal diameter (but external diameter could also be less, making them loose). There is variation in the extent of rocking with all the rocking bridges due to component manufacturing tolerances, not just with the size of components but also things like exact thimble hole placement ... if the thimbles are a fraction closer together or wider apart than the bridge posts, the posts will tend to rock less, against the outer / inner walls of the thimbles instead of down the middle of the thimbles where the diameter is max. Also a higher bridge will seem to rock more even when the extent of post movement within the thimbles is the same. Downforce and saddle friction can also play a role.

Na. Got it in a trade on here. There are little plastic clear pieces attached..is this what your talking about?

What would you suggest wrapping them with?

They are little plastic clear pieces, but they are an additional sheath that goes over the clear plastic pieces on the post that prevent the post screws from moving up or down. It sounds like you don't have them.

I actually just acquired a 7.25 Staytrem a few days ago and it didn't have the non-rocking post sheaths either. I suppose I'll wrap them in aluminum foil tape as an alternative to obtain a non-rocking bridge.

Correct, sometimes they are plastic, other times metal... I think I got both of them when I bought my StayTrem back in the day.

I would probably suggest you contact them and explain your situation, and see if you can't get a set of those. I know John only deals with the UK market at this point, but perhaps he'll support an existing bridge of his out in the wild.

I was considering doing this very thing... and I happen to be one of the last US customers to receive a Staytrem right before we were cutoff too, so I thought he might be more inclined to send just the plastic sleeves on that alone. I think a fear of potential rejection has prevented me from reaching out to them thus far.

You never know until you ask!

I keep seeing advice to wrap tin foil around the posts and such. Without being too argumentative, I will just say... send that email.

Aren’t there brass bushings that will fit that are like $1? Maybe bring the Staytrem to the hardware store and you might get lucky?

I have a brand new staytrem bridge I got from them and I’m about to put it in my Johnny Marr Jaguar as mine has the wrong size bridge but I don’t want it to rock. Guess I’ll find out when I put it on.

Thanks for the insight! I will be following this thread.
