Stereo Input Question

Post by Magnatoner » Sun Dec 09, 2018 5:29 pm

Hi there,

I have a few stereo amps that have a stereo input jack that blend the two sides together. I don't have and stereo output guitars, so I employ a trick where you put a normal cable only 1/2 way into the jack and you get the sweet stereo blend. I have just added a Magnatone 480 to my family and it has an industrial grade (my techs' words, not mine) input jack for the stereo input and it will not accept the "1/2 in" trick for more than a second or two before Ejection. I did a search of mono-stereo cables and didn't really find anything that made sense. Just wondering if anyone here knows of a product/hack to get me into the blended stereo world I want so bad.

Thanks!

Looks like it has two separate mono input sockets as well as the combined stereo input. So you could also just run a mono Y-cable to the two mono inputs.

So ...
One TS socket to TRS plug (stereo input) ... TS socket tip soldered to both tip and ring on TRS plug, and shield to shield.
Or ..
One TS socket to two TS plugs (two mono inputs) ... TS socket tip soldered to both tips on TS plugs, and shield to shields.

Either would be easy to solder. But the second should be easier to find readymade. eg

EDIT: OK I found the first one too ...

Thanks for the input timtam! I had seen the hosa adapter but wasn't that excited by it, but thanks to you giving me the proper title "TRS", I searched around and found this:

Not familiar with the brand, anyone ever use mogami cables? Don't want any tone-sucking :)

The hosa is wired the way you need for the first option. The mogami isn't ... it's a balanced-to-unbalanced cable. Look at the wiring diagram on that page - instead of what it shows, you want the tip on the TS side going to both the tip and ring on the TRS side. The tip and ring are the left and right of the stereo signal.

These type of adaptors / cables can be a little bit fraught ... you have to be 100% sure they're wired the way you want. TRS and TS just describe the plugs, not how they are wired.

Personally I would probably go with the mono Y cable into the two separate inputs.

If you want just one cable to do the whole job from guitar to amp get your tech to solder one for you. It's dead easy. Just mark it clearly so some roadie doesn't assume it's something else, like the mogami. ;)
