question about wiring/help with an issue

Post by tele_pathic » Sun Sep 02, 2018 1:37 pm

Ok, so I'm in the process of installing Fender AVRI Jazzmaster pups into my Squier JMJM. I followed the schematics provided by fender. Just put a string on and here's the issue: 3-way switch does not work; further, both rollers function as a volume pot, neither as a tone pot. I've double-checked and triple-checked everything, I think. Is there something I'm missing? I mean, clearly there is, but what is it?

Thanks.

So you just swapped the pickups ? Or replaced the whole Squier JMJM wiring ? I think we need some pictures. And the wiring diagram you mention.

I changed all the pots and switches too. I’ll post pics tomorrow.

SHIT!!! I reversed the mini pots for the roller: I used the 500K for the volume and the 1meg for the tone. Would that make a difference in performance? I mean, would that mistake alone account for both rollers functioning as volumes and make the 3-way selector non-functioning?

JM roller pot tone is 50k linear not 500k. Is yours 500k ?

But I doubt swapped pots is enough to explain all your issues.

No, it must be 50k

I don't know why it won't show the image. But here's link. I'm using/comparing the wiring diagram from Fender FMIC and reverb.com

Which 3way switch do you have ? The right angled version with all terminals on the same side ?
https://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online_R ... witch.html

Some diagrams are confusing. For example on the Fender diagram the two output terminals have to be tied together (they don't usually come that way), but it's hard to see that clearly with the two levels of switch terminals. But if you know how the switch is supposed to work you can test your switch wiring with a multimeter to make sure it is making the right output connections (ie left input, both, right input) for each of the 3 positions.

The Rothstein diagram at reverb draws the switch somewhat differently again.

I have the right-angle 3 way switch. I looks like this:

Those lugs on the bottom are supposed to be connected to something? Is it supposed be like the stewmac diagram?

Right now, using the image from the stewmac website and kind of working right to left, I have the bridge pup (that's the white wire in my image) on the outside top lug closest to the pots, the middle lug is wired to the right-most lug on the volume knob for the lead circuit/3-way switch, and the left-most lug is wired to the toggle switch for rhythm stack.

Yes, like the Stewmac diagram. Inputs to one level (3 tabs), output (2 tabs tied together) from the other level. If you look really closely at the Fender diagram you can also see that.

The middle lug of 3 is ground.

The 2 tabs tied together is the output to the volume pot.

Thanks for the info. Got that soldered. BUT now I've lost the bridge pup on the 3-way and the rhythm circuit. Should there be a jumper from the output on the 3-way switch (the two lugs together) to the middle lug above it?

FUCK!!! Who can I mail this to, have you wire it up for $25 and mail it back to me? I don't want to spend $200 on a pre-wired harness

No, if you jumpered the output tabs to the middle (ground) tab on the switch you'd be shorting your output to ground all the time, ie you'd lose everything.

Sounds like you're getting close to fixing it. What is the other (non-hot) side of the bridge pickup connected to ? It should be grounded (anywhere).

Anything else you looked at on the wiring diagram and weren't sure about what to do ? ;)

BTW pre-wired harnesses can be had for less than $100. :)
