Jaguar Mute screw heads at an angle?

Post by mywhitenoise » Wed Jul 18, 2018 6:15 pm

My guitar didn't come with a mute, but I wanted to install one. I drilled some 1/16" holes using the pickguard holes as the guide, when I mounted the mute into place, the screwheads were at an angle...is this okay?

Just looked at mine. I have the centre screw not fully down against the plate and the outer screws are also not flush. The mute moves within the gap from the scratchplate to the top of the screws. My outer screws are flush though...

Are the screws at an angle or is the mute plate tilted giving the illusion the screws aren’t level?

There’s a mute setup guide here somewhere. Have a look. I would post a link but I’m on my phone, sorry. I think the gist is tighten the outter screws all the way down (lightly) then back off a quarter turn and test the mute. I “beveled” the screw that rests on the plunger and mine works far better now. I’ll get a pick next time I change strings.

It isn't what I was thinking of but good stuff there. I think this might be what I had in mind but not really a direct setup guide:
