I have a 1964 JM that is all original... Trying to get the vibrato setup.... the arm fits snugly in the collett. I am unable to set the tremolo "lock" function when the screw is loosened all the way... still have to depress the bar a little to get the lock to slide back.
When I use the bar there is some spring noise/loose feel... It happens when I bring the bar back up to pitch not on the depress...
I am thinking that the guitar was stored for years with the spring compressed (arm on in the case?) and maybe the spring needs to be replaced... either that or I should just tighten the spring screw to tighten the feel?
The problem with that theory is that on my 64 (and all vintage JMs?) the screw that holds the spring in place is crimped (?) on the end so it won't fully unscrew from the metal piece holding the spring... so I can't get the spring off...
Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated!!!

You should tighten the spring.
