High E breaking at ball end anyone try this?

Post by vexed73 » Mon Dec 11, 2017 2:59 am

I have a problem with breaking the high e string on my JMJM. Had the problem stock but now I have an avri trem and staytrem bridge. Thinking about threading the old ball onto the new string hopeing that will help but wonder if anyone has tried it and did it help or make it worse?

I tried that and the string got caught in the back and snapped anyways.

YMMV, but I just solder the ends and buy several spare high strings at any given time. Haven't broken a string in a while, so it's a good solution.

Thanks figured someone would have tried it. Time to get the old solder iron out.

I had a similar problem. This is what I did & do.

1. Solder the end winds on the e & b.... do this before you string up
2. Gently file the string hole on the trem to remove any burr
3. I flipped over the trem plate screw by the e /b
4. I use flatwounds

Not sure what if any of that stopped my strings breaking but since I did all that 2/3 years ago I've not had an issue.

Also really good article with info on this ......

Flatwound strings wouldn't do anything for the high E or B string breaking, though. The "flat" aspect only applies to the wound strings, not the plain strings.
