Current state of WRHB pickups

Post by ScottCirrus » Thu Nov 02, 2017 12:27 pm

Hey everyone,

what is the opinion in 2017 on affordable Wide Range pickups? I'm specifically looking for affordable (<200€ per pickup) options, so the whole Telenator CuNiFe vintage deal is not an option for me. I'd rather settle for "close enough".

My bandmate has a Tele Deluxe with the reissues - I just barely like the sound of them through 1Meg pots. I've seen more than enough guitarists with 72 Teles /w stock wiring to know that the reissues are really "ugh".

I have looked into the Creamery WRHBs, they do seem to be quite nice - any testimonies here?

Apart from that, are there any good options? Preferably Europe/UK.

Also, since I stumbled upon those while putting an order together, has anyone by any chance tried these uber-cheap knock-off WRHBs?

I have the "revoiced" Reissues in my Lee Ranaldo Signature JM that are not that bad
Bought a pair of real vintage ones that I didn't come around installing yet to compare (yeah I know)
Also have a neck Jazzmaster WRHB from Jess Loureiro that sounds good - but he can be hard to reach and therefore not really recommended

Besides theCreamery there is Mojo Pickups and Catwhisker in the UK who do Alnico Slug WRHBs that get good reviews ...and David Barfuss in Germany has WRHBs with Alnico Rod Magnets

Didn't have the chance to try any of them first hand but planning to build a Tele custom and get a neck pickup from one of those three mentioned

I have a set of Catwhisker WRHBs and they're a major improvement to the stock ones. I didn't even change the pots (still the sock 250k I believe) and I can actually play the guitar clean air with just a bit of od. The sock pickups were really bad, imo.

Danocaster likes and uses these often. $250 for a set:

As far as humbuckers with alnico rod magnets go, I've been curious about Sentell Pickups

(There's a couple models that might be interesting to you)

And I imagine Rose pickups might wind you something since they have one in a JM cover, and also sell HB

But sorry, I don't have personal experience with either.

Rose Picassos are great. I had a set. They kinda quack, though, which may or may not be WRHB accurate, I never played "real" ones so I dunno.

But they're very clear and beefy.
This is an excellent rectangle

I have a Picasso too but with 6x6 poles showing - always thought that was a PAF lol
It's the bridge to my Jess Loureiro WRHB - so its a WRHB only guitar then - good to know :-D

I have no soundcard but will make a comparison of all my wrhbs sometime...

Oooohhh, those Rose Picassos do look nice. I'd really be interested in sound samples of them.

If you can find a set of used Lollar Regals, usually $300-$350/set they're very good. I preferred the Regal in the neck to a vintage wide range I had. It was a bit burlier and more defined with dirt. In the bridge though I preferred the vintage one. The Regals sounded great clean there, but got a little abrasive dirty for my taste. I've heard that the all-Alnico ones are a little sweeter in tone, which was definitely the case with the vintage ones. If so, a mix of a Regal in the neck and Alnico in the bridge could be really nice.

I've got a Creamery neck WRHB in my Tele Custom that I love. I have it on a rotary for splitting, and all sounds are amazing.

I'm pretty pumped on the Novaks. I don't know if thats OSG faux pas or not.

Definitely not. I don't see anyone around here giving you shit if you said you liked playing some 80's shredder guitar, haha. Novak seems to be pretty well loved around here. Especially for his JM pickups.

There's now a lot of WRHB replacements to choose from ...

FWIW, Telenator is shutting down his operation at the end of the year.
