POTENTIOMETER ADVICE
hello offseters !
I am thinking of switching from I meg to 500k potentiometers on my AM 65jazzmaster.
could someone tell me if 500k pots has less hIghs-taming effect (when on lowers the volume pot) compared to the standard 1M configuration?
thanks
Max

Re: POTENTIOMETER ADVICE
Changing to a lower pot value lowers the amplitude of the resonant peak of the guitar. So you'd "tame highs" if you switched to 500k. In practice I'd rather just flip the tone control back to 7 or wherever on your 1 megs rather than go to the trouble of swapping pots. The effect isn't 100% the same, but the tone control is there to "tame highs" in the first place so...
I'm not sure if you're asking whether 500k pots will get you more highs; they will not. In fact, compared to 1 meg pots not much will give you more highs short of a new set of pickups or a new amp. The effect of swapping pots is actually much more subtle than people seem to think anyway. I say play with your eq.

Re: POTENTIOMETER ADVICE
With the standard I meg config, when I dime the volume it lowers the highs of the pickup. and that's quite drastic of an effect ! I was wondering if that effect would be less pronounced with 500k pots.
I do play quite a bit with the volume knob ..
maybe I should play with a 500k resistor in parallel to hear how the tone changes with volume changes. I ll keep posted.
I could use a treble bleed circuit also ..
otherwise the guitar sounds really great (with the controls dimed a bit)
thanks for your reply danley !

Went a step further with my AV65 Jag pickup Super-Sonic with 250k vol and tone. Made a world of difference in taming the brightness.

thanks for your reply,
I guess 500k pots would be nice
I 'll try the 500k resistor trick to see what happens...

Re: POTENTIOMETER ADVICE
I just tried the sound with just a 500K resistor in parallel (to simulate a 500K Vol /500k tone configuration)
and the results may be what I am looking for.
when the controls are full up:
less extreme top end, the difference is definitely audible!
a little less output .
when the controls are dimmed, less clarity just as with the standard 1M 1M configuration.
the sound is more homogeneous between cranked and dimmed volume settings.
I may try these "vintage taper" CTS pots by emerson or mojotone in this guitar:

Re: POTENTIOMETER ADVICE
I'm confused. What do you mean when you say 'dimed.'

Ok. 'Dimed' sometimes means 'on ten'
