Conductive Shielding Paint?

Post by Shadoweclipse13 » Mon Jan 02, 2017 6:45 pm

Has anyone ever tried the brush-on stuff from Stewmac?
http://www.stewmac.com/Pickups_and_Elec ... Paint.html

I've been looking for a really good one and remember someone around here recommended a brand in UK that was a military grade aerosol conductive shielding paint, but I haven't found anything that good in the US yet.

I haven't tried the StewMac stuff, but I've used some from Ebay. Some guy just sells different size shielding kits for pretty cheap on there. Stuff worked great for my various projects.

Did a search on ebay to try and remember what brand/seller it was, and it like the one I bought came from a seller called NWcustomguitars. I'm not affiliated, but that looks like the same kit I got. Came with copper tape.

That was about 4 years ago, so maybe there are cheaper bulk options out nowadays. Still, I hope that helps.

I bought some on Ebay a few years ago for a couple Jazzmaster I had, worked a treat & a lot easier than fiddling with copper tape.

I've used the paint, and I've used the tape. I guess I've used the tape more but it's really six of one half dozen of the other, as far as ease of application and effectiveness.

Of course, if you plan on shielding the pickguard, and you should then the paint doesn't work for that. You'll still be needing something else there. So maybe that's why I tend to use the copper tape more, since I can put it under the pick guard also. Saves me a step.

What is the guitar in question?
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I've used paint and been happy with it. There is an earlier thread where some folks have found differently.

I've found the foil to be really fiddly, and the paint more controllable.

It's pretty much every guitar project from here going forward. I've only used tape, and it's ok (never had problems with noise), but it's always been a huge pain in the ass to work with. Maybe I need thinner tape, but it never bends all that easy and never looks smooth like this:

No, mine never looks like that either, and if you would see mine you would probably see some blood... that copper tape shit is sharp.

It is! I'm not too worried about it being perfect honestly, it's more the thought of "easier to work with" that has me questioning paint. Thanks for your input!

The shielding paint is safe, works well, and can look OK. I put a few coats on in the Jazzmaster and sanded it so that it was smooth:

Works fine, looks OK. I'd use the paint again.

Awesome Larry! Is that the stuff from Stewmac, or a different one?

It's the Stew-Mac stuff. I don't even know of any other brand, really.

Careful with some of that paint, it can be carcinogenic. Like everything else, I guess...
