Jazzmaster/Jaguar Roller Knob Question

Post by helvetg » Sun Nov 20, 2016 6:03 pm

So I had my roiller knob on my Jazzmaster slip off while working under the hood, and I cannot seem to reattach the knob. This is probably a stupid question, but I am building a Jaguar too, and I'm having the same issue with putting the knobs on.

How exactly do I go about putting the knob on?

They're held in place with a set screw that screws inwards from the outer perimeter of the knob and bites on the pot shaft. It requires a small allen key.

You'll probably need to loosen it a touch to get the roller back on the pot. Once it's back on tighten the set screw.

Ah, that might explain it. Do you know what kind of allen key? All I have are some allen key's from a Mastery Bridge, a Staytrem bridge, and an original AVRI Jaguar bridge. I guess I might need a smaller one

Does anyone know the size of the allen key I need to twist the roller knob?

If you can't find the answer on Google, try searching Fender's site, or email Fender's customer service and ask. They are actually quite good about answering emails.

Is it American or Japanese spec? They're different parts with differing dimensions and I would suggest it's likely different fasteners (metric vs imperial sizing/thread pitch).

1/16" hex key fits the grub screw in the rollers on my AVRI Jaguar - The nearest metric sizes to this are 1.5mm, 1.27mm (smaller) and 2mm (larger).

I no longer have any Fender Japan rollers to check, but there must be dozens of CIJ/MIJ offset owners who might be able to check and chime in?

Can anyone confirm the right key size for the Jaguar knobs? For me the 1.5 mm doesn't work. It fits but it is too loose to turn.

Which Jaguar? US spec?

If so, it’s still 1/16” - see previous posts in this thread.

Do yourself a favor and save your sanity. As long as you put these away in their carrier you'll never need another hex wrench ever again.

I noticed you're in Canada so I got you the Canadian Amazon link.

I have a 2002 CIJ Jaguar on the bench right now.
Can confirm the hex size is 1.5mm for the roller knob set screw.
