Hiya, I have a wee question about string gauges. I currently use 12-56s in E standard on my Jazzmaster, and I was considering picking up one of the new Duo Sonics at some point; I favour a heavier gauge of string [roundwounds] and I'm curious as to what the maximum gauge a set of vintage style tuners can take is?
Something in the back of my mind is saying it's a 60, and if I was thinking of putting something like a set of 14-68 on the DS I'd be dubious about it fitting. [Also sets heavier than what I tend to use seem to be for baritones. Are they tapered towards the tuner end like bass strings?]

I've got a Squier VMJM strung with 12-70 gauge strings without any trouble, just needed to recut the nut.

I have a Bass VI clone with regular vintage-style Kluson tuners. It takes them just fine. I'd worry more about the neck taking the strain then the tuners.

Re: Daft String Gauges
I use beefy slinkies (11-54) on just about everything. I guess they're mean to to be for downtuning coz they're not a million miles away from the gauges Cesar Diaz put together for everybody's favourite cowboy Stevie Ray. I don't downtune, and the guys in my local shop don't really get it. "feels a bit masculine", "dunno how you do it, Billy". I used regular 11s until I got fed up with rotosounds, discovered the beefies and found they sound great. Never looked back really.
