Mustang Vibrato Question

Post by Shadoweclipse13 » Sun May 28, 2017 7:12 pm

As a lefty, I've never messed with one: I usually just try not to look at any guitars on the wall, as I can't play them anyways :D I'm in the process of figuring out one of my projects and I was wondering if you could disassemble a Mustang vibrato, and switch the "lipstick tube" and make it lefty without any other modifications? Mustangs are one area that I really lack knowledge on....

I don't see why not. I wouldn't be surprised if all left handed mustang vibratos are just right handed ones put together backwards with a different arm.

Thanks Bill! That's what I was seeing. Looking at pictures of it underneath, it looks symmetrical.

Any idea what the depth needed is for the arm posts and springs?

It's flippable 180 degrees BUT the stock way brings the string in from the front and then wraps it under the tube and flipping it 180 will bring them straight in from the back stop tail style. That works but it decreases the angle by alot. People do it all the time but then they dock the tube all the way down which prevents you from using the trem. It is not possible to flip it upside down. So it's possible but not ideal as far as the setup is concerned.

Interesting... I'm gonna be using it on a baritone if I use it, so I'm not too worried about string tension. I would be mounting the trem part on a custom plate, so it would be farther from the bridge than on a Mustang. Of course, now thinking about it, I'm not sure Baritone thickness strings will fit through those holes. Maybe I should look at another trem...
