I have a recent success story. Got to work on this bobkat months ago when I was working in a local guitar shop, owner's buddy was offloading a ton of gear. I was between trade jobs and didnt have the cash. Listed at $299 and eventually got sold to this kid I plugged it in for, for just $200. Couple weeks ago I was in the right place at the right time, the kid was in the store the same day I stopped in. He knew I had wanted it and asked $100, I gave him $120 because tis the season. The owner was kind of pissed that deal went down in his store  I wish the vibrato bent upwards, but otherwise I love this thing.

I had a Pelham blue FB VII. Always loved the looks of them, but didn't like the sound. Switched out the pickups. Sold it. Missed it. Bought it back. Bought new pickups for it again (the shop had switched them back). Refinished it to Sherwood Green. Wrong shade of Sherwood-- it's the 'faded' green and not the deep green I wanted. Sold it again.

Pretty much a cursed guitar as far as my back account/moronic tendencies go.

me. so i was in a punk band and i have a squier silver sparkle jagmaster with black guard and wrhb's. i sold it because the pickups in the guitar were not great for the music. i sold another guitar to buy a supersonic and that worked better but the band thought it was ugly. sold the 2 for a fender jaguar and that really didnt work for the band. then i sold the jaguar to buy a gibson sg special. i regret selling all the guitars except the sg. i tried to buy the jagmaster back but my mate sold it on.

I went through a gear purge about 6 years ago. I wasn't playing at the time and the light bill was due.

When I started playing again I regretted it at first, especially my Classic Series '69 Thinline and my original, non-reissue Blues Deville 410.

I still think about that rig, as it was the rig that helped me figure out my sound/style.

But I've wound up with an American Vintage 69 Thinline and a 1968 Ampeg Gemini which are better guitar and amp in every way. Plus I have a bunch of other cool guitars and amps and pedals and misc. music gear. So my rig is better than it's ever been. And I wouldn't have been able to build it that way if I hadn't sold that gear in the first place.

So, in the long run, I'm much better off...

Sort of trying to do that now.....have been feeling nostalgic for a 62' RI Jag I sold to Domm a few years back. He sold to someone else, so unless someone here got it, probably just out there in the giant gear pool. Might try a local CL post to see about it. Otherwise now looking for a sweet, lightweight 62' RI IBM Jag like I used to have.
Here's the one I had.....

I traded an '85 Rickenbacker 360 and cash for my '63 Jazzmaster. I really miss having a Rick and keep looking at Reverb and local shops for a double bound 360.

I came across my old one at a Guitar Center one day, but I almost didn't recognize it at first. Humbucker pick ups, a different bridge, the second tier of the pickguard was gone and so was the "R" tail piece. :fp:
I was thinking someone tried to make a punk/chuggachugga machine out of it, then noticed the dings and chips and recognized that it was "mine" they had done that to. :'(

I thought about buying it (for less than I sold it for due to the "mods") and restoring it, but it was almost too far gone. I'd really rather have a double bound than a single at this point anyway. I hope it found a good home. If you can feel sad for an inanimate object, well I felt sad for that guitar. Not "crackwhore sad" but still.

YES- and thanks for tearing open an old wound!

Twice, actually- and both offsets (shocker).

1) The 1st version of the Squier VM Jag, Fiesta Red, concentric knobs and buckers. Pretty much exactly PERFECT set of mods I was already planning to do myself.
I "bundled" it with a lot of rare vintage pedals and got f'd on a trade at GC for a SF Deluxe.
I say that, but I pounced because they had the amp WAY under priced because the "new guy" bought it in, and either he or the seller- or both, mislabeled it, and it was WAY under valued.
But I still gave them a pile of gold for it- guess we both did ok, but DAMN I miss that sassy red harlot.

2) CAR ver. 2 VM Jag RI- same sob story; I was in a blind obsessive compulsive vintage Fender amp hoarding frenzy, and just kept throwing gear at them for these amps until they'd loosen the grip on their greazy paws just enough for me to yank the amp away from them.
I tried buying it back THE NEXT DAY but it was already sold!
Bought sf green, wasn't 'feelin it', awesome player tho, moved that on, and then just recently did bring in a nice dupe of the original.
Not the same, though. The neck, flame, tint etc. were much prettier 1st time around.

Taught me a lessen though.

I've done it three times. One was a magical sounding japanese jag...I happened to hear it on a recording I'd done and realized how stupid it was to sell it. thankfully the guy was out of the honeymoon phase (had been maybe 3-4 months?) and was willing to sell back. Turned out great and was glad to get it back.

Second was a squier affinity tele that I remember played incredibly and that I'd upgraded with seymour duncans. I had had several of these and always seemed like great guitars. anyways was wanting to get another squier affinity but they had shrunk the necks on the new models so I contacted the guy several years later and he agreed to sell it back. I got it back and the neck was skinnier than I remember and I just wasn't digging it. Had to re-sell at a loss I think.

Third time I tried to buy back a magical sounding but weight/uncomfortable Agile LP with dimarzios - incredible clean tone that I haven't heard on a guitar before or since. guy said he was still happy so wouldnt sell.

One of the first "proper" guitars I ever had and the first one I ever bought full price from a shop was a Japanese 62ri Strat. I had gone in to buy a USA Strat and after trying everything they had in my local store this was head and shoulders better than the rest. It had a fairly chunky neck too and I really loved it.

When I started my love affair with Jaguars I traded it for an OTM Jaguar. A few months ago (and about 5 years after I did the trade) I found out who had the guitar. They had spotted a thread where I said that I was going to buy a Strat. He offered to sell it back to me for a great price and it's once again back where it belongs.

I'll never sell it again.

I've tried twice; once successfully, once unsuccessfully. Both were #1's and looking back I have absolutely no idea whatever the fuck I was thinking when I decided to let them go... Never played better guitars than these two.

The first time was with my old Custom Shop Strat- my number one for years. It had the lightest amount of ageing on it and looked, played, felt and sounded like a real early 60's one- Sonic Blue with a dark slab rosewood board and clay dots. Just a KILLER guitar. Sold it to a jazz guy locally. Reached out a year later asking if he'd be into selling it- he said he'd consider it, but wanted more than I sold it for so I passed. I reached out again another year later and he agreed to come down on price, but there was one caveat: he'd had the rosewood board scalloped. This fucking killed me, because a) I was super eager to get back my old #1 after auditioning dozens of Strat's over those couple years, most of which were dogs b) I actually had the money ready to go and thought I'd have it that night. I'm still gutted by this, because I've never played as good a Strat since owning that thing- it was truly special. Letting go of this Strat is my biggest regret- I really really wish I still had it.

The only other guitar I tried to buy back was my Custom Shop Tele. I'd sold it to fund an old Jazzmaster that'd become available a few hours away, but a few hours after selling the Tele it came to light that the JM had suffered quite sever water damage and had a few issues which weren't disclosed during the initial discussion with the dealer. I was gutted. The new owner was through-the-roof happy with the new Tele; he immediately realized what an amazing and truly special guitar that was. I immediately tried to buy it back the next day, but he was set on keeping it- anyone would; perfect weight, great finish, perfect fat neck (it's actually a Nocaster), epic sound, etc. At the time the Tele was my only guitar and I'd been experiencing a creativity spurt just then so needed a guitar in my hands asap. Slim pickin's when it came to JM's, so I ended up getting another CS Tele off a local CL type site. It fucking sucked- a complete dog. Tried new pickups, a new bridge, new saddles, etc. Nothing fixed the epic amount of suck this thing exhibited. I started running the racks at all my local shops trying to find something good, but I kept coming up on dud-after-dud at all price points. I managed to, after about a year, talk the guy I sold it to into selling back to me and for that I'm forever thankful. Became good friends with him and his brother and now hang regularly. Funny enough he's been bugging me to get it back for the past couple months. This thing is never leaving my side- never making such a stupid mistake again. I'm not kidding when I say this: there were moments were I felt physically ill without this guitar in my hands. This guitar will never leave my side again.

Image

Not feeling quite as gutted as the above two guitars had me feeling, but I do miss the crap out of my old '60 Jazzmaster that I just sold recently to fund another purchase. Best damn Jazzmaster I'd ever played. Best feeling neck of any guitar I'd played and incredibly lush and airy sounding pickups which were a dream to hear.

Image

Might try to buy back my old '56 Les Paul Special at some point as well... the neck on this thing was super fat how I like 'em and was just super resonant.

Image

Would also love to buy back this CS "Fatneck" 335 when I'm a bit more flush with cash... had to let this go recently as well and really am missing having a quality semi-hollow.

Image

Not guitar related so I won't post pics, but I've been trying to get the guy I sold my old Oberheim OB-8 analog synth to to sell it back to me. Got the new Prophet~6 'cause I thought having something more stable and newer would be better for me in the long run, but it doesn't even begin to touch the OB-8 tonally- that thing just oozed mojo. Really really bummed I ever let that thing go. Also tried to get back my old Moog Voyager to no avail. Fuck.

currently thinking about it. i sold a AVRI JM to friend some years ago, so i could pay some bills. he's not using it, as far as i know, and gigs with a Squier JMJM instead. last time i saw the guitar it wasn't in the best shape. so maybe i can make a bargain and buy it back for way less, because it needs a lot of attention. i wouldn't mind to put some work into it, to bring it back to life again. and i guess he doesn't need it anyway.

Nice! A USA Reverend with a metal top and a bigsby is pretty difficult to find these days.
