'70's Jazzmaster or CIJ

Post by Naturality » Tue Nov 07, 2006 1:46 pm

I was wondering, since I'm saving for a Jazzmaster, what's better a 70's one, (with blocks+binding :?) or a Plain dots CIJ, Because I've heard that 70's were quite poor, due to CBS' quantity over quality manafacturing.Has anyone tried both, if so, which one's worth getting, thanks

you would have to try the 70's..... quality is inconsistent.

years ago I had a mint condition 68 Jag, It was a dog. Crap pickups, crap tuners, crap neck pocket. It was crap. I sold it and bought an MIJ, some seymour duncan pickups and a nice amp. It was soooo much better. It's the only vintage guitar I've been glad to say by bye to!

But I have played fantastic '68s..... you just have to try em out!

Thanks, I love those necsk, though, I suppose I could get an MIJ and buy an Allparts or Warmoth neck, although I wouldn't have the money. I could save up though.

I have a 79 JM.

I acquired it with a few flaws, but now I have done some work on it, it's actually quite nice.

One mod I recently did was sand the thick poly on the neck down so it's really thin, now it feels great.

There's a cheap 71 here:

I have a 76' JM, its a great sounding guitar and I love the 70s looks. It does weigh a ton though (more than any les paul I have ever played, even 70s ones... its seriously like 14 lbs).
I think its made out of that really heavy ash from the late 70s, what has been said is true, try it out, it may be good.

FWIW although I don't own any 70s offsets, all my old P basses are 70s and are great players .. they seemed to be overlooked by CBS when they were making some of their worst "improvements" .. as with the JMs, they never went to 3-bolt or tilt neck plates (although the neck pocket problems people get with 70s Fenders are probably more to do with sloppy workmanship rather than the 3-bolt arrangement as such).

Wow, I didn't know they made those, thanks. Thanks to all of you for your help. I'm most probably gonna get a CIJ with block inlays.

I owned a '73 JM.  It was a refin and while it looked cool, the neck was real crappy (thin... felt like it was gonna snap) and the electronics had constant issues.
