That's it... I'm currently working on restoring the 450 and when I'm done that will be my last guitar for a very long time, maybe forever. I can't justify or afford to get more, and can't sell any that I have due to sentimental or holy-grail-realized attachments. I'm looking forward to playing more and GASing less, appreciating the tools at hand and actually using them.

How long is a piece of string?

I have a 59 Guild archtop, an 81 Les Paul, 84 12-string Japanese acoustic, and a couple of knockabout acoustics. I need a good Jazzmaster. But I would say that's too many guitars, right there. You surely don't need more than two electrics, really.

Totally agree....even though I say I have all the guitars I'd ever need, there is always a "+1" in my head, but I think that is just to keep me going in life, to make making money exciting....Maybe I just need to get out more, but, it's been said:

I've got 7, 6 of which I play pretty regularly and my first guitar which is around for sentimental reasons and alternate tuning experimentation. I'd say this is too many for me because I'm just a bedroom player, but I've come to appreciate having so many in the same way I loved having tons of toys as a kid. I might not use all of them to their full extent, but I love having options in case the mood strikes and I feel one is going to have the tone or feel I'm looking for. Plus I just love the way guitars, and instruments in general, look and I feel like each one is a piece of art that I can actually touch.

I always bounce between being that "only one" and having a few mentalities. I think four electrics and two basses would be me limit though.

To me it's part of a broader question: how much stuff is too much? my problem is not that I am a collector (which I am not) but I am an accumulator. I am seduced by bargains across a wide range of interests. I also Iike to fix and tinker with things so I wind up with a lot of stuff that is trash to others or is useful for parts someday. I have 12 guitars (inlcuding basses and acoustics) at the moment and all except one is in playing condition- which has historically not been the case. I don't think 12 guitars is a bad place to be in isolation of other factors, but sometimes I look around our house and sigh. So many guitars, amps, effects, drum kits, tools, wood- and metalworking machines, bikes, microphones, mixing consoles, records, stereos, salvaged lumber, books, nifty antiques, furniture, kitchen gadgets... and I know myself, without a major life change like a move, I have little incentive to offload any of this stuff.

Someone mentioned upthread about how sometimes guitars stick around because they're not worth flipping. That's true for a few of mine where I have invested sometimes serious money into replacement parts, time consuming repairs, etc which I'll never be able to recoup in a sale. Sometimes it's a guitar that I got for a song, and could easily sell for profit, but my irrational logic goes like this: "I'm not using this XXX, but I only paid $YYY for it and it's worth twice that. Once that XXX is gone I will never be able to get another for that price, so it would be foolish to sell." Even writing it down, is making me realize that this totally backwards and I should turn those things into money, and invest in useful or profitable things. So, um, thanks OSG. you helped me figure something out.
