Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
I've realised recently that really any more than one guitar is too many. I have this romantic idea of having one guitar that really defines you and that really becomes a part of you as a player, like Neil Young and Old Black. That being said, I have 3 electric's: an MJT tele that would never be worth selling because its a waaaay better guitar than it would ever be worth, and was my first electric, and my '63 Jag that really shifted my whole world as a guitarist. My third guitar will be a modifed '78 Musicmaster that serves as a road/flight/van/gig safe stand-in for my Jag.
And I've always tried to tell myself that you should never be spending more time on forums ( ), and buying guitars, and maintaining a guitar flock than actually playing and especially writing. But it is an affliction we have all suffered.

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
recently i came to the conclusion that i had too many guitars for my needs. Sold both my squier VMs recently so i am down to
jazzmaster, stratocaster, tele, sheraton, 1 acoustic, p bass. Plus i have en epiphone dot which will i will be trading for a crestwood next week.
I think that's pretty good in that i got a bunch of variety and most of my bases covered.

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
If you gig, I think you have to have at least two. I have to bring a backup, I wig out about breaking a string even though I rarely do. I am down to five now
50th anniversary Jag
AV65 Jag
Lee Ranaldo Jazzmaster
Squier VM jag with the Marr mods
Squier VM Jazzmaster
I feel like I finally have all my bases covered. They all offer slightly different options for me but are all the type of guitar I am most comfortable and familiar with. I still think it is too many perhaps, but I mostly just play 2 of them with the others being nice diversions. Sometimes picking up a guitar I don't play as much brings out a new song for me. That makes it justified in my book. That said, I will see this post a year from now and wonder why I have GAS for something or why I have bought yet another guitar!

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
I think depending on a person's age and sentiment, you may find you have a bunch of guitars. I have a bunch of guitars. I plan on buying more. I find that new guitars always inspire me to write new songs. There's a value here that I can't begin to quantify. I currently have about 8 electrics, and only 2 of those don't get regular use [as in daily, if not weekly play time]. Those two are more for sentiment, and also need some real work done to them.

I have 5, all different kind and neither of them cost me more than 1K. I think its not too much even if they don't get played often. I got space in my house and they give me a lots of joy, so who cares

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
Was downgrading the last few years to 4 electrics, an acoustic and a bass.
But since last year i bought 4 more electrics (all Offsets). Sometimes I think is too much but I really like all of them... my girlfriend thinks i am crazy though

My answer is when they become a burden. I’m pretty close to this point right now.

I'd say anything more than what you actually use. I only have two guitars, and they're swapped in and out whenever I find I'm not using one or the other all too much.

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
I have far too many but I have a taste for oddballs that were relatively cheap - a vintage Silvertone, an aluminum-necked Kramer, a Greco Dan Armstrong copy. The only problem is how much room they take up.

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
I'm at 4 right now, which feels like too many, but I seem to hover around 4-5 electrics typically. I'm trying to pare down to two right now. I seem to always gravitate towards some favorite one and no matter how many I have, one seems to get 80% of the playing time and a second maybe the last 20%.
I also seem to pick up more for some reason the less I play out/play with other people. During the period when I was most actively gigging, I had just one guitar and got very used to that one.

I want to have one good example of all my favourite guitars someday. For no other reason other than I love guitars. I have too many favourites and that's the problem.

Same here. My desert island guitars are:BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Tue Jun 19, 2018 4:52 pmI want to have one good example of all my favourite guitars someday. For no other reason other than I love guitars. I have too many favourites and that's the problem.
Tele (with traditional two single coil setup)
Jazzmaster
Danelectro/Silvertone
00 or OM acoustic
I am pretty set in the acoustic and JM departments, but I’d need to step up my Tele and Dano game if I were to actually do this.

Re: GAS Question: How many guitars is too many?
I usually agree with the sentiment stated by Einstein above, but I kinda ”need” a few more than just one right now...
What I have is:
Bilt Relevator LS
Parts Tele
An old Rickenbacker 480
Ibanez Jet King bass
Ibanez Jet King 2
An Epiphone SG I got really cheap just to have a fun basis for mods.
Cheap classical guitar which I’m lending out to my mother.
Might seem like a lot for mostly just playing/recording at home and doing sporadic gigs with my band and friends every now and then... but in my mind the bass doesn’t really count and not the classical guitar either. And the Ibanez I’d sell if it wasn’t for sentimental reasons and the SG doesn’t really count either since I got it really cheap and I usually keep it in our rehearsal space anyway... so yeah, a lot of ways to justify owning a lot of guitars :p
Now what I ”need”:
A cheap JM or similar to keep in the rehearsal space.
A baritone (doesn’t really count as ”just another guitar” either... right?)
A Titan KR2 (which I’ve already got on the way...)
Ok, in my defense, I practically don’t spend money on anything else except bills, food etc. I feel like the guitar version of a crazy cat lady.
