Rather than just any fave players I'll stick to fave offset players. These guys are one of mine. The Astronauts. They inspired me to get an Oly White AV62 Jazzmaster which I got in 2003. I have other faves too since it's hard to chose just one.

Anyone else wince for his poor JM as he ran the drum stick up the neck under the strings ?

I think I prefer the way Rowland Howard assaulted my senses without assaulting his equipment. ;)

Not at all.

Found it much more cringeworthy that the amp had been set to around speaking volume, hence the mic picking up all that picking noise :k

Lost in translation perhaps. I didn't cringe. I physically winced, involuntarily, as the stick rattled up the neck under the strings. But I found the whole exercise interesting. And I'm glad someone like Ranaldo does that stuff, just to see how it sounds. It's like Philip Glass and other more experimental musicians. I'm glad that type of music exists, and I have listened to it in small doses from time to time, although I'm not sure I would ever go to a concert to hear it for two hours.

I did see the Birthday Party quite a lot though. Underlying the noise there was always a riff or a bass line though.

Not lost in translation, just a Sonic Youth fan since my early to mid teens (now a long distant memory!) so not really surprised or concerned seeing a drum stick being used in such a fashion.

Very jealous that you got to experience The Birthday Party live! I only ever caught Rowland S Howard live once, doing a solo spot opening for Beasts of Bourbon.

No, a guitar is just a piece of wood with stings and pickups on it. It is just a tool to make music and Lee Ranaldo (and Thurston Moore) are good at pushing what you can do with one.

Leaves Turn Inside You is one of my favorite guitar albums. Just dug it out again after a long time. Damn it's solid.
I went to their last show. Won't forget that one. (Plus it's on YouTube)

PS Sara Lund is a colossal drummer.
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

Unwound was Giant Henry when I moved to Olympia in 1991, and THEY were great. Unwound is not nearly as exciting as Giant Henry was. I remember being on acid and running into the whole band (Giant Henry) in Safeway and I think I freaked them out...
