Yeah, it was an attempt to break into the solid body semi market that Gibson seemed to "rule" after the Gibson Marauder tried to break into the single coil + bolt on neck market

OK, I found some Trini Lopez stuff .. basically it's an ES-335 with a six-a-side headstock.
Likely unstable link so I won't post the pic, but there are some good shots here:

Original ad! .. except the headstock is normally the right way up, I think.

Not that it worked for either company...Naturality wrote: Yeah, it was an attempt to break into the solid body semi market that Gibson seemed to "rule" after the Gibson Marauder tried to break into the single coil + bolt on neck market

Yeah. But then again I don't think the universe would be in balance if they both cornered each others side of the market

Actually that Trini Lopez body is almost more Rickenbacker-esque:

Re: Lovely Starcaster Photos
There were actually 2 Trini Lopez models: one was the full-depth hollowbody with the gigantic cutaways and the other was the one Mez linked to with the thinline 335-style semi-hollowbody. Dave Grohl played (plays) the thinline version, at least in all the pictures and video I've seen.

they should resurrect that headstock, haha. it's a bit aggressive but not overmetal.

Re: Lovely Starcaster Photos
I asked what guitar he played on the Foo Fighters Forums and got punded by loads of people saying everyone asks that, and that it's an original Trini, though he has many guitars. This can be seen in the 'In Your Honour' videomanwith2brains25 wrote:i thought he played a gibson memphis?Naturality wrote:Yeah, the one Dave Grohl plays has a normal way up headstockmezcalhead wrote: Original ad! .. except the headstock is normally the right way up, I think.

I kept my eyes open for them for a long time and then snagged one in London a few months back (I saw it while touring some shops with fellow offsetter zhivago). Just be patient - they pop up every now and then, usually around the $2500 mark.mewithoutus wrote: so, anyone know of a starcaster i can get my hands on? yeah? no?

Re: Lovely Starcaster Photos
I thought these were the most hideous guitars made when I saw them in the 70s. Never so much as gave one a second look until I was in a small guitar shop with NO inventory worth looking at other than a fairly rough black Starcaster (about the only recognizable name in the whole shop that wasn't on strings or accessories). Picked it up and played it for a LONG time. Was a very nice playing and sounding guitar and there was something cool about it that I'd not picked up on in my younger days when a Fender had to be a Strat or Tele (how sad was I?). If the guy didn't want $1495 for it which seemed absolutely insane to me, I might have snagged it. Didn't realize how freaking hard to find they were until I started looking. Black was always my favorite finish on these too. Chances missed...

When was that? I seem to recall that the Starcaster was one of the most expensive guitars that Fender sold when they were new - that can't have helped people overcome their natural hesitations...serial wrote: If the guy didn't want $1495 for it which seemed absolutely insane to me, I might have snagged it.
