Seriously @Mechanical Birds, get a roller TOM-style for the Mascis. It's spot on. I've had one string break on me in two years (and that one was the end anchored into the trem). And they are also much cheaper.

Seconding this. Maybe I'm getting less cack-handed with my playing style these days but barely had a string snap since I put a Wilkinson roller on mine. I cut more off than I snap, and I only change every few months.electric12 wrote:Seriously @Mechanical Birds, get a roller TOM-style for the Mascis. It's spot on. They are so much cheaper aren't they? I talked with the dude from mike&mike's about it though and he advised against it because of the extra moving parts and tendency to rust and a few other things. I really really appreciate the Staytrem but being broke most of the time sucks. With the Wilkenson - don't they have a different radius too and sometimes have trouble fitting on the posts? I'm probably just gonna ask for the Staytrem for Christmas or something haha.

Hey, long time no mod,
Today I was bored, I mean like really, so I've installed the Firebird neck pickup I had in my Telecaster in my JMJM, using the pickup cover as the mounting ring.
20mn with a swiss army knife and voilà.
I was thinking about it for a long time, and now it's done. Very happy with the sound.
Of course, I'm ashamed for the über-crappy indoor/no-light cellphone pics.
Cheers

Re: Show your Squier Mascis JM Mods/Improvements!
My Mascis upgrade experience has been very unfortunate, most likely due to my inexperience. I bought a GFS roller bridge, the "Fits Les Paul" one that has been recommended on here a few times and thought it would be a very simple drop in. This didn't happen to be the case because the posts were a bit too wide for the bridge. I ended up shoving it on there, a tight fit to say the least. I left it on there for a week and noticed no difference in sound or play-ability. Then, when I was practicing last night, the low E string fell off the roller bridge which has never happened to me before with the AOM. I quickly swapped the roller back out for the original.
As for more tuning stability with trem usage, I cannot comment on that. I bought my JMJM without the stock trem and bought a 6mm import sized trem arm for a replacement. This also proved not to fit and I have tried sanding and filing the trem arm down with no luck.
Sigh.

Re: Show your Squier Mascis JM Mods/Improvements!
Does anyone know what value pots are in the SQJMJM? 1 meg? 500k? I'm getting ready to upgrade pickups to some that are more vintage sounding and don't like 1 megs with those. I guess I'm trying to find out if I need to replace the pots to when I'm doing the pickups.

Probably too late to help, but standard pots are 1meg, RC are 1meg & 50k, respectively.sjperry54 wrote:Does anyone know what value pots are in the SQJMJM? 1 meg? 500k? But the real reason I found this thread! Went into Guitar Center with the intention of selling 2 guitars, ended up leaving with a JMJM. Great axe, especially for the price. Only thing I don't like is the rosewood fingerboard, but I happen to have a maple neck from a project that went sideways that I'm going to put on. But I'd like to paint the headstock to match. Anyone know where you can get it? Or something close enough? I checked Guitar Reranch and didn't see any...
