I got one a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with it. I found the AOM bridge a little rattly, and I love the Staytrem bridge on by squier Bass VI. It's probably the only mod I'll do to the SQJMJM.

Yeah, I totally missed this, but the new/re-released AOM replacement has special studs that allow the bridge to float the way it's meant to.

Hi all.

I've read through all these threads, and they've been super helpful, thank you. But one thing I haven't been able to suss out is exactly what tuners I should get. I've read a lot that says don't bother, but at this point, I've put in a bone nut, and have a staytrem on the way, and put an AVRI tremolo in, and I do feel like the stock tuners are a little janky. So, what have you bought that will fit without modification?

I have a reamer and can adjust if necessary, but I'd love to hear real world experience and examples. There are some Kluson tuners on Stew Mac, but I'm unclear on the sizes, and what kinds of bushings would be best. I'm cool with sticking with the vintage style, but that's kind of the last frontier for me and this guitar.

This is mine. Custom pickguard and Novak pickups (JM-V in the neck and JM-90 in the bridge); also changed all the electronics.

Got this in late 2012 if I remember correctly. Started modding in 2014 sometime. Finally hit a stopping point as the only major part left is the body.

Started with various pickguards and pu covers. Settled on black and the original covers/knobs. AVRI trem and SD Antiquity II's were next. The original neck gave up the ghost last year when the truss rod quit moving. Fender now sells Classic Player JM necks for $229. I got mine through my local dealer for $200 +tax. Always check your local dealers first. He called up Fender, checked availability, and ordered it right in front of me. New and warrantied.


The bridge is the "JM/Jag/Mustang-o-matic" mod. Its a Warmoth Modified Mustang bridge with the legs pulled off (easier than you think) and holes drilled for the Adjust-O-Matic posts. A Staytrem AOM drop-in is north of $125 incl shipping and the Warmoth is $56-ish with shipping. Warmoth wins.

I think if the neck on mine quit on me I'd go through the trouble of tracking down another J Mascis neck, I like it so much.

That one looks good, though. Pau ferro? I really don't think it's any bit as bad as people make it out to be.

I never got a true feel for the Mascis neck since I hadn't yet gotten around to fixing the radius mismatch (which drove me nuts). Would have been about a third cheaper to get another JMJM neck, that's for sure!
Yes, its pau ferro. In this instance it looks perfectly fine. With situations like this for me the aesthetics are secondary. But I can completely relate to folks who are going for a specific vintage thing and need the dark rosewood vibe.

Altogether, I'm happy I can mark off "Jazzmaster" as finished-and-done in my brain.

When people say that the supplied T-o-M bridge is "rattly", is it because of:

a) Loose parts/screws? The rattle happens all the time when any string or a certain string is played? I have a Yamaha AES 800 and one of the intonation screws has always been loose and makes a buzz when that string is played. Sometimes I super glue it in place.

b) Friction or slip/catch on (esp wound) strings when the vib arm is used?

c) A child's rattle has become lodged in the vicinity

d) There is a rattlesnake nearby attracted to the sound

e) something else?

I had the impression that the TOM was the cheapest part on this guitar. It felt like cheap Chinese metal, the kind of „everything that melts can be used“ junk. Swapping the bridge made a huge difference to me. A good guitar was instantly fantastic and now is my go-to instrument. Seeing all the mods in this thread only made me love my almost-stock-looking one even more... but the amber switchtip really was worth it
