News of New Jazzmasters

Post by mavsbball » Wed May 09, 2007 8:37 pm

Anyone know of any news on the Fender front as far as if Fender will be producing anyother JM's with a 9.5 in radius fretboard which is more true to the mid 60's JM's either through a product line, select dealers, or the custom shop? Because i know they made a thin skin Jag which featured a 9.5 in neck exclusively through wild west guitars i beleive.

Yeah the thin skin Jazzmasters are now available through Dave's guitars for around $1599.

I don't think Dave's has the JMs in yet.  Still has the Jags only on the list and I got an email last week from Dave saying that they were not coming in for a few more weeks.

If they are in, I wanna see 'em!!

I spoke with Dave back in February and he said that he was told to start looking for them in 8-10 weeks.  He said a couple of weeks ago that they hadn't shown up yet, but that he's waiting patiently for them!

They've had the Jags in there for a while.  It is my assumption that all of the select dealers (Wildwood, Dave's, Music Machine) will be getting them at the same time.

Apparently not out yet.  I checked w/Dave's, and Dave said that he expects them in the next month or two again.  Sounds like a delay on the Fender side of things...

I don't own a Jag or Jazzmaster (yet) but I've been jonesing for a Jazzmaster in Ocean Turquise....I wonder what colors will be available on the thinskins?

A few days ago I was drooling over the Shoreline Gold Jags on Wildwood's site. Very Nice. I wonder if the thinskin Jazzmasters will have matching headstocks like the Jags?

Both Dave's Guitar and Wildwood Guitars confirmed this earlier in the year but neither now has an estimated delivery date for the thin-skin Jazzmasters. FWIW Fender shipped thin-skin 3TSB '62 Telecaster Customs around the time the Jazzmasters were to ship. As I understand it (information courtesy of Dave's Guitar), the difference in the finish between the thin-skins and AVRI is that the AVRI have a catalyzed undercoat and additional layers of nitrocellulose lacquer whereas the thin-skin lacks the undercoat and has fewer layers of lacquer. Otherwise the electronics and hardware, except frets, is the same. Both thin-skin and AVRI have a Fender composite nut, although initially some of the publicity on the thin-skin series said they had bone nuts. Originally I thought the thin-skins were going to be more of a custom shop period correct guitar but they're not at all. Once I realized that I found myself a lot less enthused with the thin-skin series. IMO the thin-skin '62 Telecaster Custom would be a great deal better if they would've put the correct bridge saddles on the guitar.

yea i don't get the 9.5 radius either. It's a Jag, and it should feel and play like a Jag. If AVRI did matching headstocks i wouldn't give a crap about the thin-skins.

Until very recently I was far from concerned with neck radius having played both 7.25 and 9.5 necks regularly. Then I spent a good bit of time with an AVRI Telecaster and switched to one with a 9.5 neck...

...I'm a convert to the vintage-correct 7.25 neck now  ::)

i have a Tele as well. i can play both comfortably, but i like the 7.25 better. Tele radius on an offset just seems wierd.

I'm pretty sure 7.25" radius was the vintage Fender radius, which is why most reissue guitars are 7.25".  9.5" is what Fender uses on the majority of the new instruments. I believe the terminology they use is  "Modern shape."
Damn kids, get off my lawn!
