Win a bandfull of instruments from Fender!

Post by Fall reverb » Wed May 09, 2007 3:06 am

Here's a nice pic of a Fender advertizement/competition from 40 years ago I found a while ago on the web - the competition's first prize was a Fender Jaguar and Jazzmaster guitar, a Jazz bass, Bassman and Showman amps, a Rhodes piano and Rodgers drums. The second prize was a Fender Jaguar with a Twin/Reverb amp, whilst the third prize was a Wildwood acoustic guitar...that was not exactly a bad competition to enter eh, seeing what one could actually win at the time...

Enquiring minds need to know - you actually won the competitions, but Fender and Marshall both refuse to give your your prizes?

Cool ad. What year was it .. 1967?

It says Twin Reverb in the ad copy but does anyone else think the pic looks like a Super Reverb?

What would really cap it off is if they threw in the check jacket the guy with the Jag is wearing.

Yes, the ad is from 1967, and I think it's pretty interesting to see that the main guitars one could win in this competition at the time were actually offsets - this either indicates that these models were Fender's most desirable/popular guitars at that time (which is in my opinion the most likely reason) or it could mean that these models were (becoming) so unpopular that Fender simply decided to give 'em away for free in competitions... ;)
At any rate, I'm pretty sure that if the current marketing-department of Fender would decide to start a similar competition again today where one could win free Fender-gear, then chances are pretty slim that a Jazzmaster or Jaguar will be featured in the ad in order to attract kids...

Would be interesting to know who won that and what the status is of all that stuff right now...

Would be a pretty nice collection if it's all still with the original owner.

Well, the acoustic is probably worth the same or less in today's dollars. Everything else is, well, we all know where prices are for that stuff.

There's an address on there to send away for a list of winners.  Let's look the bastard up! ;D

And those guys look pretty square for 1967.  They were on the verge of "the summer of love"...I wonder if they got any.  :P
One more guitar, then I'll practice!

That is exactly what I thought.  Much to squarish and tall to be a Twin, IMO.

Funny that the Rogers drum set is on there.  I have a Rogers kit.  I wonder if they were owned by Fender at one point.  ???

Fender didn't ever own Rogers, but CBS owned them both at various times. And CBS spun them off around the same time in the early 80s when they were getting out of the music instrument business.

Also interesting to note that the jaguar in the picture with the super/twin reverb has a dot neck where as the guitars in the first price picture all have blocks and binding.

Last prize was a Coronado Guitar and Bass along with the new Solid State Super Reverb Amp.

I would have sent them back!
Competition Stripes make them play FASTER.
