The tones from a JM

Post by 1946dodge » Fri May 04, 2007 9:28 pm

It is about 1:20Am. My wife is asleep and I just played some chords on my 64 JM.
I am not a great gutar player. But this instrument just sounds so heavenly.
There is no other guitar that I have ever played that sounds like it.
It has a shimmering tone, I guess I could describe it.
I can feel it in my old bones the way it vibrates when I play a simple chord.
There are very few pleasures in life after 60, but this is one I still have, the sound of this old guitar just puts me in another place.
I can imagine how beautiful it would sound if it were being played better than I can. But even in my unslkilled hands it sounds to me just wonderful.

I can see why everyone here loves these guitars that no one cared about a decade or two ago. They were "sleepers" - neglected by everyone. I was fortunate to get mine when they were cheap. I never regretted it.

Cheers to everyone and enjoy yours too.

Yeah, I stopped practicing properly for a while after I got my first Jazzmaster .. I forgot all about scales and so on because it was just so nice to sit and go "kerrang" on an open E chord and listen to it fade away.
Distance-crunching honcho with echo unit.

Oh, so true.  I remember the first time I played a chord on my Jazzmaster.  It's not vintage, but it is magical.  You can hear the strings resonating behind the bridge.  It's a sound I had never heard before...I love my JM!!!

You want bliss?  Jag or JM.  just start some vamping Duane Eddy type rythm, something like honky tonk, or any low single note blues type vamp.  Do not use your palm at all to control anything!  If you need any muting use your fretting fingers to control things.  Let those strings behind the bridge start going sympathetic.  If your guitars are anything like mine and you're playing with any volume at all...  Man that "Pre-Feedback" mode it starts getting into where it's completely in the background but it follows the melody.  With all due respect to the metal boys, THAT is riding the lightning! :-*
May God bless the Banjo Players... They try so hard...

I have come to the realisation that there is no other guitar for me other than my Jazzmaster. if anything ever happened to it I think I would stop playing entirely.

Even with CIJ pickups it sounds different than other guitars.  8)
