To my mind the "isolation" that I felt there (in Beijing too) wasn't a bad thing - it was strangely invigorating. But it definitely takes a lot out of you - I recall in both cities coming back to my hotel room at night being completely exhausted from all of the sensory overload. So while it takes a lot out of you, I personally felt that I gained a lot from the experience.
