As far as I remember, he stated in some interview it IS a 1962...
It explains the "Pat. Pend." trem, then. Thanks for that info!

It looks to me pretty much more like "Pat. # 2,972,923"... I may need glasses...

It would need to be a pretty early '62 to have a Pat Pend trem, I think, but possible.

I thought I could see the "EN" of "Pend." between his thumb and index finger on that pic. Of course I could be wrong, though.      It's details!!  ;) :D

Sorry Soiouz - I had simply forgotten to add an emoticon at the end of my sentence to indicate that my reply was definitely tongue-in-cheek! ;)

Regarding Smith's Jazzmasters - it had always been pretty unclear to me how many he actually had, but I guessed it were indeed 2 examples that both had the 'buzzstop' as well as the 'Top Twenty'-pickup added in the middle position...

Here are some more pics showing him with his Jazzmaster(s) -
this is possibly one of the earliests photos (May 1979) where he can be seen with his first Jazzmaster - the guitar has an Olympic White finish, and as you can see the buzzstop has already been added as well as the 'Top Twenty'-pickup :

The same guitar at the Reading Festival in August 1979 :

In this pic, taken at a Cure-gig in December 1979 the guitar seems to have been stripped & now sports a natural finish (or is this another Jazzmaster?) :
Image

Australia, August 1980 - the (same?) Jazzmaster has (again) a white finish...

Live in 1982, black Jazzmaster :

München (Alabamahalle), January 1984 :

1984 (exact date unknown) - the 'fish' Jazzmaster...

Supposing he had "only" 2 Jazzmasters, the Fish being lost to any efforts of coming back to normal shapes, it ends up with the black one with matching headstock being his one and only (almost original) Jazzmaster...

It's a bit hard to believe, given he has been seen with so many different looking Jazzmaster.

Maybe we'll know, someday.

why. it shouldn't be always the same jm? first white, than stripped, than Black refin and than  :k
I say that because the proto-buzz-stop is something of almost handmade and unique, another similar gadget will look surely different from this..

And here, somewhere, in 1980... 2 Olympic White Jazzmasters on stage...

Thanks for posting that last pic, Ahahah - it definitely proves that Smith had at one stage 2 different Jazzmasters;
Here's another proof that he had 2 different Jazzmasters modified with the same buzzstop-device & a 'Top Twenty'-pickup - this pic was taken in November 2002 in Berlin :
