I have to say I think if you're a bass player, used to say a jazz bass and you play a VI with a 95 on the bottom E, then it will seem a bit flabby due to the short scale..because it is compared to a Jazz with a 95 on it.

:-\ ... the 95 -  E string on my VI is not flabby at all!!! it has quite the same tension of a low E string on a standard bass...

Erm I think that's impossible under the laws of physics. A short scale neck gives lower string tension than a long scale with the same string gauge..

True, but the perception of flabbiness is in the fingers/ears of the player, really.

Being a physicist ...  I must comment....

your statment is true, but only in the case of the same type/make of string being used on both basses being com pared.  (I will not even consider the variability bewteen strings of the same type/production run)

If the strings are different in construction, material, winding  (flat / round), age etc ... you could even have a scenario that the shorter neck bass would have higher tension than the longer neck bass

For example  (this is a stupid example, but it will show what i am trying to explain)
If a Bass VI was fitted with Labelle flats and the jazz bass you are comparing it to was strung with rubber bands, then I would easily imagine that there was more tension in the labelles than the rubber bands.
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

...my VI with current setup and .025-.095 strings feels just like my other basses... I like it 'cause I love Jazz basses and the VI is quite like... a crowded J-Bass(!?!) :)
