Re: The Fender Color Chart
Wizard, this is where the "I think fender mixed up paint specs years ago" argument occurs.
4 or 5 years back I ordered a CS NOS 1960 Daphne blue strat. I was expecting a guitar the exact colour of the guitar you have in your pic. When I received the CS strat the colour was not what I expected. In fact I had to return that CS strat back top fender because of a blemish and received the second Daphne Blue 1960 NOS CS strat that they had ordered. This second strat was exactly the same colour as the first start.
A couple of months after that I bought an AmStd 1996 sonic blue strat . This colour is what i thought Daphne Blue was meant to be like (and it is the same as your photo). I'm not arguing who is right or who is wrong... just I think (as in oly white and arctic white and polar bear arse fur white) there has been some wrong labelling of daphne/sonic blue over the years by fender.
both these photos were taken with the same camera, same flash settings, approx same distance away, on the same day.

Re: The Fender Color Chart
I hear you. I've heard it many times. Fender doesn't seem to have a clue it seems some days. There are often differences of opinion, but paint codes don't lie, only color monitors or the folks who push the wrong mix button at the paint store. The picture you show on the left is somewhere between surf green and seafoam green. Surf is the less intense, the lighter color of the two greens. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the Jaguar in Fiesta Red next to it is the right color, so I'd tend to say it's surf green. Sonic blue is very very pale blue, washed out. Daphne is a deeper blue with just a touch of green and is darker than sonic by a lot. Some Daphne's appear lighter than others, why I don't know but I think it's what base color they shoot it over. I have a Daphne blue Jazzmaster that's much more blue than the Strat. The real test comes in the paint codes, the original ones used in the 50s/60s. If you look at Curtis Novak's web site, for example at just the wood blocks it's really hard to tell. But when you get to see a picture of a guitar in that color, it's still more different. I've had the luxury to see the paint, freshly mixed at the local auto paint dealer...all of them. Surf green is lighter than seafoam. Sonic is lighter than Daphne. Screw up one factor in that mix and you don't get true color. Change the base coat and it also affects the color. Daphne on white primer is different from Daphne over a sunburst. Don't ask me how I know
Anyway, head over to Curtis Novak's web site and see what I mean. Curtis knows colors.

Re: The Fender Color Chart
Rick, just for clarification the Guitar on the left IS NOT surf green or foam green (or any variation) is is Daphne Blue.
2001 CS `1960 time machine NOS team bulit only came in Oly white, fiesta and daphne blue. I chose DB.
yes the jaguar next to the strat is fiesta.
when you compare the colour of the strat, don't compare the section in shade (the top or the sides) , just look as the edge which the flash has caught. This is what the whole guitar looks like.
I also know what Foam green looks like as I have another AmStd strat in Foam Green
If you want a photo/example of a sonic blue strat that everybody in the world acknowledges as truly being sonic blue, then check out any photo of George Harrison / John Lennon circa 1964 - 1968. they both bought 1961 - 1962 sonic blue strats. To my eyes they look like the colour of your strat.
Just further evidence that the strat in my photo is daphne blue
here is the pic from the fender website of their CS 1960 NOS strat in Daphne Blue
here is the order form/receipt from the CS shop I bought the strat from.
lastly the details of sonic and daphne are:
Daphne Blue: type: Duco paint no:2804 fender years: 60-65 auto years: 58 Cadillac
Sonic Blue: type: Duco paint no: 2295 fender years: 60-72 auto years: 56 Cadillac
I work for GM, and when I have looked at our historical info/data on colours in our archives, the colour fender called sonic blue and attrributed to the 56 caddy is the same as the colour of your strat and the AmStd strat I have which I call sonic blue.

Re: The Fender Color Chart
You know, it's not worth getting upset about. I've seen this discussion so many times it's unreal. I've seen "daphne" so many times in so many different shades it's crazy. I have a picture of a 1958 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe and it looks green, somewhere between surf and foam. I think it's the clear coat taking on some yellow overtones and moving the color towards green. My Uncle had a 62 Coupe back about 1968 and the color on the outside and the color on the door jams were two different colors. That's why it's my favorite custom color. My Perhaps when Fender shoots the NOS they give it that aging it would acquire over the years. However the forumlation used to mix the paint is fixed. It takes x amount of this and that and so forth. It's clear when shown side by side in the can. So, let's agree to disagree. I think that's best. I don't think either of us is totally right or totally wrong.

Re: The Fender Color Chart
Yeah, there's so much slight variation in these colours that making absolute statements about them is almost impossible I think. I have a Fender CS strat which is says "sonic blue" on the COA and I swear it's daphne .. it's almost the exact same colour as the Ike Turner strats which are definitely said to be daphne, so who knows.
Also, monitor settings (and probably room lighting etc.) make discussing these things over the internet even more difficult. That guitar of sook's that looks green to you isn't even slightly green to me, in this room, on this monitor .. it's definitely blue and I'm sure you'd agree if you were sitting next to me .. but determining whose monitor picture is closest to the actual colour of that guitar .. can't be done IMHO .. whoever is holding the guitar in real life can say how it looks to them but there's no way to convey it to the rest of us so go figure ..
.. having said that, Mr. Novak's site probably does the best job of showing Fender colours that I've seen so far.

To further muddy the already dirty color line:
http://www.wizardsofaz.com/guitars/daphne1b.htm
Notice how the color on this is much deeper than the "daphne" strat I posted earlier. This is ReRanch's daphne.

Hows this for Lime Green?
:-\ It's not perfect but it's a lime green fender nonetheless
