hope i'm not duplicating another post here, but i'm curious what strings any other vi players use...
i've had no luck with the fender set, and have been using d'addario xl156's for ages...much better imho
any thoughts ?

Re: strings for bass vi
Does it have to be round or can they be flats? I think LaBella do a set of flats.
You may find something on FDP, I think there was an indepth discussion over there months back.

Re: strings for bass vi
the only strings I would ever use on my bass vi are Fender 5350 for Bass VI ha ha i copied most of sook...
I gotta have rounds
The D'Addario's came in a 3X3" Guitar-sized pack: 85- 25 wound tight enough to cause Kinks.
Unuseable E & A strings - in each of the 2 sets I bought.
Has that packaging changed?
I emailed them about it and they sent me a nice T-shirt... and mentioned that they might change the pack - I will not hold my breath...
Danelectro's are too short: the tapered area hangs in the nut.
unuseable - cost me 18 bucks
Hypocrasy: I've had the same set of rounds on for 2 years and several months - with a lot of time on 'em
I like them but will cheish a new set of juicy rounds.
A few examples: www.soundclick.com/spudnik to be updated ASAP

hmm - odd....never had that problem myself...but i'm intrigued by you saying that the e and a strings were 'unuseable' - what exactly do you mean ?SPudnik wrote: The D'Addario's came in a 3X3" Guitar-sized pack: 85- 25 wound tight enough to cause Kinks.

Re: strings for bass vi
I think the d'addario set would be a fine choice if the low E and A were just a little heavier.
GHS set have been the best so far for me.
My hybrid semi-flat Alloy 52 prototypes thay made be sound great but wear out to quickly.
I'm still thinking to maybe try to get them to make a pure nickle round set.

Re: strings for bass vi
I'll second what everyone else is saying about the D'addarios - I like them, but the low E is too loose, and the A is only just playable.
The silly thing is that if they looked at the tension chart on their own packaging, they'd see that these two strings don't match the rest of the as the tension was noticably less than the others.
I also emailled them a couple of months ago - they repliied that they would look into it, but any changes would take a few months. I didn't get a T-shirt though...
I've also tried the Ernie Ball 2837 set - like the Danelectros, too short (ridiculously expensive in Australia, and not worth the effort of buying just one set to try from overseas). Still, it did prove to me that a .90 would work better with the Daddario set - although the bass E from this set doesn't quite sit properly on the nut, thanks to the magic of a small piece of card, it is playable and fits nicely with the rest of the D'addario set.

Re: strings for bass vi
I should add a couple of things....
the music I write/record will always have a jazz bass on it before the BassVI 9except for one track where the bass VI is the bass. So my recommendation of La Belle falts still holds but you can seem the direction I am coming ... that is... I don't in general use the bass VI as the one and only bass.
second point ... until I put the La Belle flats on the bass VI , I won't say the bass Vi was unplayable... which is obviously wasn't , but I was totally unhappy with the sound , the feel , the tension, the dynamics when it was strung with teh standard fender bass VI strings .... Alfred has commented on how good the La belle flats were so I took a chnace and they are brilliant. Now the bass VI flies everywhere and it feels easy to play. when I play the bass VI I use my fingers, when my guitarist plays it he uses a plectrum.
Mind you strings are a very personal item and what is good for me mqay not be good for you.

Re: strings for bass vi
The D'Addario E and A were slightly bent - due to the tight packaging, resulting in completely screwed up harmonics/intonation.ahpook wrote:hmm - odd....never had that problem myself...but i'm intrigued by you saying that the e and a strings were 'unuseable' - what exactly do you mean ?SPudnik wrote: The D'Addario's came in a 3X3" Guitar-sized pack: 85- 25 wound tight enough to cause Kinks.
