Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
Just to chime in, I've got a bag of white MOP that I bought off ebay when I was gonna get a custom neck made for my JM. I ended up forking out for a slab instead so I'm left with surplus. I'm happy to send a piece or two over if the P & P is covered (if I can find it!?!). I won't charge for it as it aint worth that much anyway. I love those tort guard - white bodied JM's + the witch hats & the inlays.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
I definitely agree with Jon and Justin, for around $1500 or less I would definitely consider it. Also, if the neck refin is still nice and shiny, some 0000 steel wool will give it a nice feel.

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
Just went to the store.
1. 7th fret inlay is still there.....but the white is gone.....its just an amber block. Wierd. Never seen anything like it.
2. Body is worn. Neck feels good. Must have been refinished a while ago....its been played.
3. The looks like it was blue before white...I got to see under the pickguard.
4. Needs a new nut. Cut WAY shallow, and 1st string is broke off.
5. Fret buzz and frets out on bends on treble strings.
6. Strings fell off saddle constantly. Felt like 9s.
Thoughts?

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
A good feeling neck is a defintie plus. If it needs a new nut, I'd say that really needs done and then a good setup before you could really assess much else. The fretting out and bridge problems are a lot worse when the action isn't right. Heavier strings definitely help out a LOT. I don't go any lower than a .052 on the low E. I've always had good luck with GHS Boomers skinny top/ heavy bottom sets (.010-.052). For $1500 or so, I think I would get it. Do they do any in house repair work? If they do, changing the nut and then setting it up better before you buy would be great. That would probably slim down the negotiating leverage though.
Also, did you eman that the high E string was broken or that the nut was broken at the high e? If the nut is okay except for low slots, it can likely be saved.

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
yea----a nut isn't a huge deal.....if they put a new one on, i'll be happy (as long as it doesn't fret out/buzz).
frets were nice.....prolly a refret at some point. it was nice.
i usually play 11's, so the heavy strings don't bother me......
forgot the main issue....
it was wired poorly, and the bridge pickup wasn't working.
the guess is from people always pull the guard off, and check the pots/wires.
i waited an hour, but had to blaze before they finished it. i guess the dood was cleaning up the iffy wiring job. printed out a JM schematic, and went to town.
that bummed me out. hour each way for 3 minutes on the gtr.

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
update #478
talked to the owner.
he's pissed.
he's got $1800 into a guitar that isn't worth it.
-no case
-no trem arm
- likely 70's, not 67
- 7th fret inlay (inlay in tact, just lost coloration)
-neck refin
- needs new nut
-----
he offered it to me for $1700......
no deal.
but he said i could trade my silverburst SG and $200 towards it. (bought the sg to fund a jm)
i have $1069 into the sg.
-----
i have another guy offering $1600 cash for the sg.
----
do i move on this jm, and put some love into it.....or do i take the cash offer, and wait out another piece????

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
I'd walk but ultimately it's up to you.. if you sold the SG for $1600 would you be willing to spend a bit more for something that's original, or mostly original? (body refin, new pots, etc..)
if so I think you could definitely find a better Jazzmaster

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
sold the sg this morning.
ive raised about $2g for a vint. JM, if i can find a good one.
the store that bought my SG had an old jazzmaster.
dots.....neck binding....s# started w/ 1.
shorline gold refin with matching headstock.
played like a goddamn champ. so much so, that i cannot get a jazzmaster, unless i find one as good as that....
unfortunately, it was $3900.

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
I'm sure you'll find a good one around $2k, I'll keep a look out for you.. that shoreline sounds like the one on gbase we discussed a while back, looked really nice but too much money imo. I basically had the same guitar but refinished it black and sold it for only $2500
and everyone knows how much cooler black is
hmm.. I'm going through tele deluxe gas, maybe we should trade

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
it was over-priced----
but it was amazing.
if i could have, i'd have bought it on the spot.

Re: help me buy a vintage Jazzmaster
Hold out for a bit...you can get an almost all original non-slab but pre-cbs JM on Ebay for between $2000 and $2500 if you're a little patient. It will be refin'd and have a couple of minor part changes, but you can find a better deal and a better guitar than that one you're talking about.
