AVRI Jags and JMs with glued body???

Post by JUC » Mon Feb 12, 2007 4:08 am

(sorry, I'm a newbie :-[)
I found out that my new SB AVRI Jag has a 3-glued-pieces body... Is it ok???
Do vintage Jags have glued bodies too???

AFAIK one-piece bodies aren't that common in vintage Fenders. My old sunburst '62 is at least a two-piece body, and there were two other old JMs that were stripped when I got them and were definitely 2-3 piece bodies. All sound great, BTW.

Personally I think the obsession with one-piece bodies has arisen with the boutique thing and AAAAAAAAA-grade flamed woods .. I'm not convinced it makes a difference to the sound at all.

I agree....let's not forget, all these killer sounding vintage guitars that we hear on records, are hardy ever (if ever) 1-piece.

with any guitar, my main concerns are: does it play well? and does it sound good?

if the answers are "yes" and "yes", who cares about how many pieces of wood it's made of? ;)

I remember pics that Doug posted of a Jag that was 5 pieces...or was it 7?...it was a CBS one....

[edit]

it was 13 pieces!!!

I recall hearing that one-piece bodies have a tendency to warp - that's why they aren't used. A two- or three-piece body seems to be the best insurance against this. That's what the highest-end Fender Custom Shop guitars use, and if there was any benefit (perceived or otherwise) in a one-piece body, that's where you'd see it being offered.

I have NEVER heard of a one-piece Fender body.

That being said, I had never heard of a THIRTEEN-PIECE FREAKIN' BODY before reading this thread, either.

That is CRAZY.  That's up in the "Firebird" range of body piece counts!  Good lord!

Two-piece is the way to go!

That 13 piece body was an early '67. Fender was experimenting with laminations at the time. Notice the dark line around the belly contour... thats the edge of the bottom laminate. It had a one piece veneer over the top and bottom because it was sunburst, and they needed to hide the butcher-block body.

Another member, IPLAYLOUD has one too, either a '69 Mustang or Bronco, I forget which.  There's a thread on it around here somewhere...

I think I have read something similar too(does that make it fact? :) )....I think the idea is to have the grain work in two opposite directions to make it stronger and less open to warping, breaking, cracks, etc.  It's probably not that common with one piece bodies anyway as long as they aren't treated like caveman guitars....  You probably see this argument a lot more with thinner pieces of a guitar like on a neck...like Gibson headstocks - where the debate is what people prefer for their headstock - a one piece neck, a volute, a scarf joint, headplate material, backstrapping, or any combination of all these things....
