While looking for photos of an Ibanez 1970s Jazzmaster clone today, I stumbled across a guitar which I'm sure I'll never be able to find, but I'm smitten nonetheless...



You could call it "Ibanez's version of Gibson's answer to the Starcaster". 

it's actually an ibanez copy of a Gibson les paul model (I can't remember the name but I'm googling for it now). The guitarist from the Zutons plays one (a gibson).

I can't remember the name of the LEs Paul model either...the lead guitarist of the Wallflowers played one too....I wonder where my Les Paul book is...there's a pic of that one in there....

this one has changed pickups though - it's had its' "low impedance pickups" replaced with humbuckers.

I always hated those things.  The pickups sounded like complete ass. 

They are cooler looking to me now than they were, but I still can't see springing for one with the LoImp pickups.  The ad that Gibson ran in the 70s was this guy who looked like a deranged Rollie Fingers in a white leisure suit.  Ugh-for all of my nostalgia, there are some things from the 70s that I'm glad are gone!

Here's a guitar porn quality photo with the low-impedance pickups. Strangely, this is one of the only Les Pauls that actually appeals to me. All of the hubub over '59 Sunburst Les Pauls is always just wasted on me (ditto sunburst $trats - just too dull and common for their own good).

How about the mid-70s Les Paul Studio with the lo-impedance pickups and more knobs and switches than 3 Jaguars?  That was also copied by Ibanez...

I saw one of those recently and it was quite a nice built guitar. I didn't hear it plugged in 'though.

The model Ibanez copied is called the LP Recording. The term Studio is used to describe entry-level-no-thrills LP's. Short lived but very similar precursors ( 69-71) of the LP Recording were the LP Personal and LP Professional that were even more cumbersome in use because the necessary transformers weren't mounted in the guitar but in some kinda outboard contraption.

Actually that's the other Les Paul that I kind of like. I guess I'm just not a good match with Gibson's marketing people - I like the models nobody else does!

Ironically the Les Paul Recording model is the most unlike other Les Paul models (an ugly duckling of sorts) but it's the only one I've actually seen Les Paul play (with a Bigsby, even!).

Apparently Les really liked these, from what I've read. I will defer to his esteemed opinion in regard to playability, function and/or sound. But I just don't find them attractive, to say the least.

I have played both I think they played and sounded great, I wonder how the Ibanez sounds?

I briefly owned an LP recording in my youth. If I somehow got it back, I'd replace the pups with something p-90 like. That would be nice. 

I used to have a les paul recording on long-term loan from a friend.  I coulve bought it from him for 750 at the time, but couldnt swing it.  Man that thing sounded great, like a cross between a les paul and a strat.  I wouldnt pay more than 750 for one, but it sure seems like other people would, unfortunately.
